Election Day Open Thread

We’ll add important updates in this post today. You can also follow me on Twitter, where a majority of my Election Day coverage will occur.

UPDATE:  Instapundit is getting e-mail updates from voting precincts around the nation; just “man on the street”, as it were.  The trend seems to be strongly that in heavily Democrat areas turnout is so-far light while in heavily Republican areas turnout is strong.  One thing to always keep in mind – as one old general once said when report of a military disaster was brought to him, “the situation is never as bad, or as good, as first reports indicate”.  Don’t put too much stock in anything you hear throughout the day – not anecdotal reports, not leaked exit polls, not MSMers saying that “trends” indicate an Obama victory.  Until the votes actually start to be counted, no one really knows.  The only job you have today is to vote.  Do that and let things fall where they may.

UPDATE II:  An interesting story about how the early voting went in Ohio.

UPDATE III:  From Russ over at Ace of Spades – this is Operation Visine:  Get the Red Out!

UPDATE IV:  GOP turnout way up in Ohio.

UPDATE VHuge turnout in Louisiana and Missouri.  Why is this important in these certain-to-go-Romney States?  Because it is a gauge of GOP engagement…very, very high.  Also, it might drag Akin across the finish line and help us gain a Senate majority.  Also helps Romney run up the popular vote score in case it does come down to 10 or less electoral votes separating the candidates and no one knows who wins tonight.

UPDATE VI:  Early exits show the economy is the number one issue and that people think the economy sucks.  Remember:  the exits are not the last word on anything.  Whatever they say, don’t let them get you elated or down…go vote if you haven’t already.  But it is bad news for Team O that Big Bird, lady parts and revenge are not high up on the list of voter concerns…

UPDATE VII:  Vigo County, Indiana, a bellweather county (has picked the Pres winner since 1956) has a big swing to Romney.

UPDATE VIII:  Right now Romney is winning the popular vote 50% to 48%…

Last chance to make a killing. If you really believe Romney can win.

My personal heartbreaker is that 37 looks like it’s going down here in California. Guess the way to a Californian’s heart isn’t through their stomach after all, but through their wallet.

On the bright side, us Californians will have the fattest wallets in the graveyard.

There are more stupid people per capita in CA than any other state hands down, and that is why they elected Governor Moonbeam and will once again vote for Obama. And bozo you are the perfect representative of the dumbed down masses in the land of fruits and nuts. You wont have a wallet left when Moonbeam is done with you.

I know this was mentioned in the previous thread, but Obama can’t fill a small stadium even with Jay Z and Springsteen. Doesn’t bode well.

Why are the Loony Left trying to get us focused on bookmakers? Is this the new face of Identity Politics?

We already know that the political commitment of the Lefties is so thin and shallow it does not go beyond hatred of what they foolishly think is “conservative” and glee at predicting misery for the Right, but this new shift to odds and bookmakers is kind of odd.

I guess it’s an “Any port in a storm” kind of thing—they can’t focus on their guy’s record, and his persona is increasingly so toxic and hateful they need to find something—ANYTHING—-to blather on about.

So it’s some kind of nonsense about how conservatives won’t bet on Romney, or some such….

Amazona: Why are the Loony Left trying to get us focused on bookmakers? Is this the new face of Identity Politics?

I don’t know about the Loony Left, but the fact is that as of this morning betting on a Romney victory could net you somewhere around a 300%-400% return on what is basically a 2-day investment! And that’s already subtracting the juice.

And consider the numbers — substantially more people have voted early, or absentee, than ever before, but the break in favor of Obama is substantially less. Democratic enthusiasm is substantially lower, Republican enthusiasm substantially higher, and the difference in ground game efficiency between the two in battleground states has substantially narrowed. So it appears to me that the poll aggregators (e.g., Nate Silver, et. al.) could have the numbers biased in favor of Obama by at least a percentage point, perhaps more. And in a close election like this, that’s all it would take to swing the vote in Romney’s favor. That’s why the market has been so volatile. I love volatile markets, because if you play them right (and pay close attention) you can make money both when they go up and when they go down.

I’m not betting the farm of course, and every investment has a risk associated with it of course. But given the circumstances, and given the potential payoff, it seems to me that it was worth a play. Given the time horizon (2 days or so), the election market offers better odds better than anything the stock market, the bond market, the futures market, the options market, etc., has to offer at present. And if you think all those other markets aren’t really “betting”, then you need to think again. In fact, if you think ANY investment — be it in a house, a car, or even toothpaste — isn’t a “bet”, then think again. EVERY investment assumes something about what your expected return will be. The only question is whether your expectations are realistic or not.

Perhaps we’ll know by tomorrow whether I was wrong or right. And to be honest, I’m already guaranteed that I won’t lose any money because I only re-invested the money I already made when I cashed in when Romney’s chances dramatically rose after the first debate. But since then his chances have faded almost as much on the election odds markets, so I thought it was worth another play. As in any investment opportunity have to do your homework and be smart about it to reduce your risk. Still, it’s important to keep in mind that every investment involves some level of risk. And as always, nothing ventured, nothing gained, ya know?

707.Waking up this morning wondering if my country will live on after tonight. It is either a chance for America to wake up and be the place she once was (or at least have a chance to crawl out of the sewer we are in) or her fate will be sealed with an Obama victory – European socialism and big govt from now on – there will not be any turning back…However, whatever the outcome, God is still on His throne and Evil will be defeated. Philly GOP: Poll inspectors being ousted for Dems
        November 6, 2012 | 8:31 am

Court-appointed Republican poll inspectors are being forcibly removed from voting stations in some Philadelphia wards and replaced in some cases by Democratic inspectors and even members of the Black Panthers, according to GOP officials.

Secrets just received this memo from GOP officials:

The Philadelphia GOP is reporting that court appointed Minority (read GOP) Inspectors are being thrown out of polling locations in several Wards.

These Inspectors are election officials – again, court appointed — and are reportedly being thrown out by the Head Judges of Elections (these Judges are elected Democrats) and being replaced by Democrats.

This has happened at the following locations:

        Ward 32, Div 13

        Ward 43, Div 14

        Ward 56, Div 1

        Ward 56, Div 22

        Ward 32, Div 28

        Ward 32, Div 28

        Ward 12, Div 17

        Ward 39, Div 1

        Ward 24, Div 9

        Ward 18, Div 25

        Ward 43, Div 14

        Ward 29, Div 18

        Ward 65, Div 19

        Ward 20, Div 1

        Ward 6, Div 11

Another official told Secrets: “one of our female inspectors was physically thrown out.”

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney decided at the last minute to make stops in Pennsylvania, believing that the race there was close enough that he could win.

A judge has ordered the GOPers re-instated – I’m just impressed that we even had people ready to go in to Philly. Usually in such heavily Democrat areas we have no presence. This tells me one thing: Romney was planning on winning Pennsylvania all along.

        Perfect Quote
Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way that you can quickly understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. It was translated into English from an article in the Prague newspaper Prager Zeitungon

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president.”

I can’t believe the day is finally here. My 18-year-old granddaughter is voting today for the first time, and she’s voting for Romney/Ryan, not as a result of any pressure from my wife and me, but from her mom (my youngest daughter) who voted for Obama in 2008, and who won’t be voting for him again. In fact, three fourths of my and my wife’s families voted for Obama in 2008. I can’t read their minds or watch them vote, but every one of them has said they’re voting for Romney this time around. In fact, a couple have said they would walk across broken glass barefoot to get rid of the current occupant of the White House. My sister in law described Obama as the biggest disappointment of her life, and she’s in her 70’s. Anecdotal evidence, I know, but it’s going to be repeated by families all across America. In fact, I know quite a few people who voted for Obama in 2008. I haven’t spoken with anyone who says he’s lived up to their expectations. In 2008 people were ready for something new and shiny: hope and change and fundamental transformation. There’s a reason only one Democrat President has been elected to a second term since FDR. Hopy-changy talk is cheap. Contrary to modern Lib-think, results DO matter.

IMO, it will go down as one of the great mysteries of modern politics that so many people were fooled by someone with no resume and no record of accomplishment. The only thing that could top that would be if a majority are fooled again.

What I can’t figure out is where all these alleged Obama votes are supposed to come from.

We know that no one who voted for McCain has switched to Obama.

We know that Obama’s victory last time was very dependent on a massive surge of positive energy on the Left and enthusiasm for him, and we know that his campaign this time is one of negativity, surliness, and lack of a positive message.

We know that the Republican turnout last time was low, because of lack of enthusiasm for McCain, and that the energy in the Romney/Ryan campaign is super-high and mounting every day, drawing in new Republican voters and bringing back many who sat out the 2008 election.

We know that LOTS of people who voted for Obama are not going to this time, though we don’t know how many will switch to Romney and how many will just not vote. This includes those who did not get their free kitchens, those who wanted free gas at $2 a gallon and now have been looking at nearly twice that, those whose pastors have instructed them not to vote for man who advocates gay “marriage”, and Catholics who have been told in no uncertain terms that supporting a candidate who supports abortion and trampling on religious freedom is the same thing as being for those very things.

        2008 final tally:
        Barack Obama (Democrat) 69,498,516 [52.93%]
        John McCain (Republican) 59,948,323 [45.65%]

In other words, in an election with a massive turnout of Dem voters, many new voters excited beyond belief about the many promises dangled in front of them, with an unpopular opposition candidate with little enthusiasm from his own party, the margin was about nine and a half million votes, or approximately 7%.

(Yes, I know this is only the popular vote, and does not factor in electoral college numbers.)

What I get from this is that Obama would need to keep every single vote he got last time, and Romney would need to add ten million votes, to beat him.

        IF—-

If the Dem turnout is as high as it was last time
If every Dem who voted for Obama does so again
If Romney does not bring in more GOP voters than voted last time
If independent voters decide that Obama has closed the deal and deserves another shot

We can see from the polling data that none of the above have happened. On the contrary, Dem turnout is predicted to be much lower, many Dems who voted for Obama will not do so again, the R/R ticket has energized the Right and expanded its voting base, and independents are moving strongly toward Romney.

So much of the 2008 victory was based on hope, and now that that hope has been shattered, there really isn’t much left except to beg for another chance and claim the other guy is even worse.

I just don’t see the attraction of a campaign based on “Well, we couldn’t, but we think we might be able to if we keep trying”.

I hope you meant the other way around?

Oh, crap — I did. Indiana will not go BLUE this time around. I have never figured out why Republican is red and Democrat is blue. Logically it should be the other way around.

Gaffe or prediction? We report, you decide.

I predict that if Barack Obama is defeated in this election that he will soon put himself and his family onto Air Force One and flee this country. I don’t believe that he will stay around to build a library of memorials in Chicago to his term in the White House.

There is no way i can predict the election results pending; one outcome is not wholly unexpected, another will be decidedly disappointing.

We voted early in the day this time, got to the polls 10 minutes before it opened and the line was already around the building and snaking out through the parking lot. the poll worker at the door said he’d not seen this since the 2000 election.

The vote for President is a moot point here since we live in the Parasitic Peoples’ Republic of California, but I notice the creepy clown is disappointed that the Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Initiative will be defeated. Seriously bozo? With two tax measures, a campaign finance bill, three crime bills; death penalty, human trafficking & three-strikes, and redistricting on the ballot you’re concerned over labels no one could understand … or read … or give a flying fig over? really?

    They walk among us.

Chaos and confusion when the polls opened; ours is a confusing ballot on which you draw a line between parts of an arrow to indicate your preference; the voters were just Jake with it, but the poll workers were in full-throated panic over explaining it.

Since this is a predominantly Republican district (two conservative Republicans running against each other for the House race) so the voters were prepared and ready. Voting went quickly, but signing in was a mess, the poor poll workers were overwhelmed by the sheer size of the crowd. Dimocrat districts need someone to hold their hands and tell them how to vote evidently, as they’re the ones that have all the issues on election day.

Btw, about 50% of the crowd was black (African-American) 25% brown (Latino) and 25% white and Asian.

should be fun to watch tonight I’ll either be happily watching the electoral votes piling up or drinking myself into a stupor.

It will be interesting to see if Romney can make big gains with the Jewish voters in Florida or whether they will vote for Obama as tradition dictates. It will also be interesting to see if the evangelicals come out in support of Mitt in places like Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

Already some whining about GOP stealing the election when an honest error was made in Florida.

An hour after polls opened Tuesday morning, the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office mistakenly placed hundreds — possibly thousands — of automatic calls to voters instructing them that they had until 7 p.m. Wednesday to vote.
But that is wrong. Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Any ballots turned in after that time won’t be accepted.

The calls went out between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. because of a glitch with the SOE’s phone system. Calls were made Monday alerting voters who had requested mail ballots but had not returned them that they had until 7 p.m. “tomorrow” to get them turned in.

About 12,000 calls, however, didn’t get through, said SOE spokeswoman Nancy Whitlock. They were stored in a queue and recycled Tuesday morning. The “tomorrow” in the message meant for Monday was incorrect when it was delivered.

Lots of anecdotal evidence of massive turnout around Fort Wayne, Indiana, today. I had to drop off a package at FedEx, and I asked the lady behind the counter if she had voted. She said she stopped by the poll first thing the morning, and the line was so long she decided to go on to work and try again over lunch. A customer at a print shop where I made a delivery had just come back from voting over lunch, and said it was the longest line she’d ever seen. The local drive-time talk radio show has had one caller after another citing huge lines and long wait times, averaging one to one and a half hours. One caller said she would have waited all day if necessary to vote for Romney. There haven’t been any calls from people who were excited to report that they had voted for Obama.

On the other hand, here in Democrat-heavy Clark County, Nevada, the Mrs and I took 5 minutes to vote – the amount of time it took to check in, immediately go to the polls, cast our ballots and leave…I’d like anyone in northern Nevada to tell me what the line is like in, say, Sparks or Winnemucca.

I sure don’t want to put faith in exit polls. Indicators from the ground (turnout in heavy R areas) is a big Romney night; indicators from the professional head counters are another 4 years and two more Supreme Court Justices for Obama.

    Where’s my wine?

Drudge Report just put Ohio back in Tossup category. Come on Buckeyes! Your Obama phones won’t help your children pay down the Obama debt!

From Jim Geraghty; “I am hearing on Twitter that the exit polls show 10 percent of self-identified Tea Party supporters voted for Obama, and that Mitt Romney is winning among households with a government worker in Virginia.

In related news, voters are messing with exit pollsters.

One thing to remember is win, lose or the court system tomorrow is the 2014 mid-terms are only 2 years away.Hopefully, we will get the rest of the week off to decompress but just as the Progressives have done to America as we knew it–we need to stay vigilant.

We took a great leap in 2010 and stand a better than average chance tonight but we also need to refocus soon on 2014 and 2016. America needs the TEA party and others to take back what we once knew to hand to our children and grandchildren. The shining city on the hill.

  17. dbschmidt's avatar dbschmidt November 6, 2012 / 9:14 pm

25% to 25% with 11% reporting. Add in the outlying counties (heavy Republican) have not been counted yet? Cackling a wee-bit early?

  18. Cluster's avatar Cluster November 6, 2012 / 9:40 pm

Close, close race. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will say though that I am saddened listening to the media talk about who white people are voting for, who black people are voting for, etc. I sure wish we were beyond that.

  19. Tim's avatar GMB November 6, 2012 / 9:41 pm

So far it is only Cook and Lake County reporting. BFD. Lets wait and see.

How come Cook is only reporting 79k votes as counted? Lose some in Franken’s trunk there?

    • Tim's avatar GMB November 6, 2012 / 10:21 pm

Hmmmm, barkys numbers dropping pretty good here. I’ll concede when the ballots have all been counted.

      Go pound sand.

  20. Cluster's avatar Cluster November 6, 2012 / 10:27 pm

Some good news anyway – it looks like the GOP will retain the House and even pick up seats so at the very least we can hold Obama accountable.

  21. bardolf2's avatar bardolf2 November 6, 2012 / 11:11 pm

Crushing defeat for the Tea Party in Indiana in the senate race. The finger pointing has begun as Mittens loses when the official unemployment rate is 8% and the real one is closer to 15%. Chris Christie is already under attack. Evangelicals stay home in droves and Jewish voters vote democrat as usual.

It all started in Iowa when Mitt Romney ‘won’ a contest where he actually lost. Wall Street and Vegas always knew their favorite son Barack was just playing good cop bad cop with the electorate and provided enough cash for him to easily carry PA, NH and the rest.

  22. dbschmidt's avatar dbschmidt November 6, 2012 / 11:29 pm

Well, at least NC and VA are leaning Romney–if we can get FL (probable recount) then at least the “South” can succeed from the US and reform the CSA. Don’t need a voter poll like prior but should make sure the voters are at least informed (unlike cyber) before they vote. Still holding out with quite a few not reporting.
