What Media Bias? Part 196

A story in the New Republic about western reporters self-censoring themselves in China:

The visa question has insidious ways of sowing the seeds of self-censorship,” Dorinda Elliott, the global affairs editor at Condé Nast Traveler, wrote on ChinaFile last month. “I am ashamed to admit that I personally have worried about the risk of reporting on sensitive topics, such as human rights lawyers: what if they don’t let me back in?” Elliott is a longtime China hand who worked as Newsweek’s Beijing bureau chief in the late 1980s. “My decision to not write that story—at least not yet—proves that I am complicit in China’s control games,” she continued. “After all, there are plenty of other interesting subjects to pursue, right?”

The most shocking thing about Elliott’s statement is its honesty. Western journalists are not supposed to make any concessions to China, and even when they do, they rarely admit it. Many people were thus horrified by recent reports that Matt Winkler, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, spiked an investigative piece about one of China’s richest men out of fear of offending the government. (Winkler denied killing the piece and said it is still under consideration.)

People are understandably angry about the Bloomberg reports, but they shouldn’t be surprised. This is all part of a larger story. China may force some two dozen correspondents from The New York Times and Bloomberg News to leave the country by the end of the year, apparently in response to their investigative reports on the familial wealth of the Chinese leadership. “Chinese officials have all but said that American reporters know what they need to do to get their visas renewed: tailor their coverage,” The New York Times wrote. On Thursday, Vice President Joseph Biden, who was visiting Beijing, said he had “profound disagreements” with China’s “treatment of U.S. journalists.” As China more harshly intimidates foreign reporters, incidents of Western self-censorship will only increase. Bloomberg is not the first case, and it will not be the last…

Not the first case, indeed.  In fact, self-censoring is something that journalists are actually rather prone to do.  There are two reasons a reporter/editor will self-censor:

1.   They back a particular policy/party/politician and don’t wish to cause any trouble.

2.  They fear that reporting the truth will result in a denial of access to a particular party or politician.

For China, it is the latter that is operational – reporters and editors are worried that if they report the unvarnished truth about China (which is pretty bad, all the way down) then the Chinese government will deny them access to China and so they won’t be able to further report on China from first-hand knowledge.  It amazes me that this is even an issue – if I were a reporter or editor, I would report the truth as best as I could and if I got kicked out, I’d file one, last first-hand report about China indicating I was kicked out for telling the truth and then, whenever I reported about China from second-hand sources, I’d point out that the only way anyone can be reporting from China is if they are willing accomplices of the Chinese government in suppressing the truth.  This doesn’t mean no useful information will come out of China, but it would show that everything from China should be taken with a grain of salt and that my competitors who remain in China are just hacks shilling for a corrupt and inhuman oligarchy.  I’d take that as a badge of honor.  I guess having badges of honor, though, doesn’t commend itself to reporters and editors these days.

I bring this up because it shows that in the slew of “news” we get each and every day, this has to be taken in to consideration: are the reporters and editors playing a double game?  We see it all the time, after all, with American MSM reporting on Obama – they both support Obama and are fearful of losing access to Obama, and so they tailor their reporting (with a very, very few shining exceptions) to please Obama.  Generally, to get to the truth about Obama, we have to take Obama statements and news reports and then dig around to see how they square with the truth (and almost invariably, they don’t).

The fundamental weakness of the MSM lies in the fact that they are not devoted to the truth – the objective truth.  They don’t, in fact, believe that such a thing exists.  Given this, it is natural that they will craft their reporting in the manner which best advances the MSM, itself.  The MSM wants a Chinese bureau and if the price of getting and keeping it is to downplay negative reports and some times put out a puff piece on China, then they’ll do it.  The MSM wants Obama to be a success and if the price of Obama’s success is to conspire with Obama to suppress the truth and slander the opposition, then that is hardly anything which can be thought of as a “price” to be paid for Obama’s success.

The bottom line is to presume that anything which comes over the transom is not 100% correct.  Don’t assume its all a lie – somewhere deep down inside the truth does exist; but don’t take it at face value.  Question everything which is stated as fact – find a second or third source, if at all possible (but, be wary!, there are kook sites out there which will use an MSM lie merely to advance the credibility of a kook site lie…”see, the MSM is lying about “Aspect A” of the situation, therefore my absurd claim about situation is correct!”).  Understand that the MSM is not on your side – they are first and foremost on their own side (so they’ll lie to please China so they can keep their bureau open in China), secondly on the side of liberalism in general (so they’ll lie to protect Obama and the Democrat party).

It is my hope that eventually a group of wealthy genuine conservatives will found a new, media empire – with standard-fare television, television news, internet and print news; all with an absolute commitment to truth above all, regardless of whom is offended.  That will be the day when we really slay the beast of falsehood which has stalked and disturbed our land for a century.

    Obama Is Tearing America Apart
    By Richard Winchester

On November 25th, New York Post columinist Michael Goodwin, an Obama backer turned critic, published “Obama’s Failed Promise to Heal a Polarized Nation.” Goodwin wrote that, “Obama’s promise to heal a polarized nation has proven to be as big a lie as his promise that you can keep your health insurance.”

He added that, “America is now so divided and demoralized that there is no hope Obama can fix it.” Moreover, “[a]s last week proved, he doesn’t even pretend to try any more.”

The last reference was to Obama’s complicity in Harry Reid’s coup in the Senate that severely curtailed the filibuster, thus seriously weakening the Republican minority’s ability to thwart Obama’s increasingly tyrannical tendencies.

Hilarious: MSNBC host likens word ‘ObamaCare’ to n-word
      Thomas Lifson

MSNBC is the gift that keeps on giving, serving up propaganda intended to benefit the far left, but which in its absurdity repels people grounded in reality. Now, one of its hosts, Melissa Harris-Perry, already familiar to AT readers for her theater of the absurd political performance art, has played a race card so bizarre that it self-discredits. Real Clear Politics provides a transcript and video here, where you can read and view the entire thing, but here are some highlights:

Zimmerman was arrested in November after Scheibe accused him of pointing a gun at her, smashing a coffee table and pushing her. She doesn’t want him charged with aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief,.and that the detectives misinterpreted what she said. In the affidavit, she calls Zimmerman “my boyfriend”. ****Prosecutors may continue with the case despite her request.*****

Yeah, but this woman is a joke and an idiot. She does indicate a death wish for MSNBC, as it just keeps doubling down on its unbelievably horrible hosts. It’s as if someone in the front office said “Alec and Martin were too classy for us, what with the homophobia and F-bombs and Martin’s obsession about peeing in Sarah Palin’s mouth, but Melissa will keep everyone reminded where we stand on the Stupid/Tasteless/Really Disgusting scale. That is, as bad as it gets.”

She reminds me of the black guy who spoke at a Denver high school a few years back to share with the students the amazing news that the word “Negro” comes from the Greek word “necropolis”, which means City Of The Dead, and is therefore has always been well known as code for “I wish all black people would die” whenever it has been used.

One does wonder why black people don’t shut these cretins up. How can a race be respected when it is publicly represented by people like this?

I wonder if anyone in the media will cover the juvenile antics of Obama at Mandela’s funeral, goofing around and taking selfies with his phone while Michelle glowers and glares off to the side. He makes it look like quite a party, but hey, once you’ve suckered a few million people into giving you another four years of travel and fun, you might as well let them know what an idiot they elected.

And I wonder if anyone in the media will answer the questions asked by Trey Goudy in this must-see video:

    • M. Noonan December 13, 2013 / 8:30 pm

Well, in his defense, the Danish PM is much better looking than Michelle…and you know, a guys a guy…we try not to make it quite as obvious as Obama did, but our eyes will wander from time to time…

Understand from the People’s Cube that Tiger Woods has offered advice on how to carry on an affair with Nordic chicks…

I have a suggestion. I suggest that you take your television(s) out to the nearest shooting range and blast away, if you live in the city. Us country folks just open up the kitchen door yell “pull” and open fire.

Really can’t miss a flying television from that short of a range.

Not only is blasting a television to shards fun, you never have see a smug face saying things you already could have figured out your self.

    • neocon01 December 11, 2013 / 8:14 am

Yeah but then we’d miss the first 48 and many other reality shows depicting the murderous actions of a portion of our population…..

    • Amazona December 11, 2013 / 10:42 am

Nah, not a fan of tiny glass shards lingering in the grass for decades.

And besides, I love my TV. How else can I follow the pursuit of Bigfoot? Or know if alien beings built the pyramids?

I quit watching Fox and political shows a year or so ago. It is all SSDD and there is no reason to waste time on them. But there is some entertainment value on TV and of course I can’t miss a Bronco game.

You beat me to a comment on the fake sign language guy. I had to wonder if he was a school friend of Michele’s, hired by Sibelius and paid a few million dollars.

And, of course, there was the spectacle of the leader of the free world yukking it up at the funeral, and the temper tantrum of his wife. Even after she slapped him down, peeled him off the blonde (no doubt insulting another national leader in the process) and planted herself between them, he didn’t sit up straight and look like a leader, or a man, but slouched and sulked like a surly ten-year-old. What an embarrassment to the United States!

But there is good news on the horizon. It turns out that the management skills of Barry are so awful that his own staff never tells him what is going on (and he is either too busy playing golf or just too bored to ask…) so that is why he never knew our embassy in Benghazi was under attack, that the IRS was using its power to advance Liberal causes and influence the election in his favor, that the NSA has been eavesdropping on American citizens on American soil, that the Obamacare web site was known to pretty much everyone else as a total failure, and so on.

I mean, how could he be expected to know these things? Sheesh. That’s like expecting Dem Congresscritters to actually read and understand legislation they dump on the rest of the country, or like expecting the same rules to apply to those who make them.

      You know, like totally unreasonable.

      And probably racist, to boot.

Anyway, Problem Solved. We now have someone appointed to (1) make the decisions about what the president should know, and (2) to tell him.

Now, is it just me or does it sound like the power and authority of the presidency has just been reassigned to a political appointee? Doesn’t the power to decide what the president ought to know kind of make the decider the man in charge?

The REAL story you will NEVER hear from the leftist yellow journalist’s

But the initiative and strategy was primarily de Klerk’s. In 1990, he took the daring step of lifting the ban on anti-apartheid parties, suspending the state of emergency, and releasing Mandela (among others) from prison. In 1991, he abolished many of the apartheid laws. The results were ominous; violence increased, de Klerk’s National Party lost three by-elections, and his mandate was challenged by the pro-apartheid parties.

    The crucial moment was de Klerk’s apartheid referendum of 1992. In a brilliant all-or-nothing gamble, he initiated a whites-only referendum on the question;

Do you support continuation of the reform process which the State President began on 2 February 1990 and which is aimed at a new Constitution through negotiation?

A defeat would have forced his resignation, new elections, and possibly the reinstitution of apartheid. Instead, a 68% victory insured the democratization of South Africa.

barry Hussein = SUCKER of the year!!

When does a revolution stop becoming a revolution and start being recognized as a misguided philosophy with a status present that is an insult to all those who believe in human rights?

Lies are a permanent part of life on the Castros’ island paradise lost. Younger Cubans have to lie about their opinions of the government, its leadership and their opinion of the United States. Old Cubans lie about Fidel Castro because those lies are the only opinion they’ve ever been allowed to have. The Cuban politburo lies about everything it does, and just about everything everyone else does; especially the USA. The Castros spew lies constantly but are so absent from reality that they seem to believe them.

Fidel has always lied about his form of democracy. It started with his “temporary” suspension of free elections soon after he took power. Lie. While every few years Cubans are forced to go to a ballot box and vote for Socialist Candidate tweedledum or Socialist Candidate tweedledee, this temporary suspension is older than I am, and not likely to really become temporary any time soon.

Another great lie is that Cuba is an egalitarian paradise; where all are equal and everyone gets a great education and has tremendous health care. But as in Animal Farm, the pigs are more equal than others. In Habana, for example, loyal Fidelistas, virtually all of Spanish extraction, are rewarded with pleasant accommodations in nicer areas like Vedado and Miramar. Those who unfortunately are not in favour, who are mostly black, live in tenements in Central City on narrow streets filled with rubble that serve as both sewers and playgrounds.

    time for civil disobedience?

After 24 years of litigation, a federal court revealed in an emotional hearing that it has ordered the famous Mount Soledad Cross removed from a veterans memorial, holding it is a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

hey court go P!$$ up a rope!!!

  9. neocon01 December 13, 2013 / 5:38 pm

SHAME on AMERICA for this marxist muslim FRAUD!!!
Originally, the U.S. Justice Department defended the cross memorial. However, when President Barack Obama was elected, the government’s defense of the memorial under Attorney General Eric Holder seemed to become lackluster

  10. GMB December 13, 2013 / 9:03 pm

    “time for civil disobedience?”

I have always thought would be the first step. I do believe, however, that a general strike by those who produce tax monies for the government would be more effective. Hit them in the pocket book, so to speak.

That and starting riots. They seem to understand rioting.

The Denver Post, well known for being quite supportive of all that is the Left, somehow managed to leave out the part about the shooter being an “exuberant” but dedicated Socialist, with political views “outside the mainstream”.

Hmmmmm. Just an oversight, I am sure.

      In every article.

They did manage to make the point, again in every article, that he was a Christian, studied the Bible, and had strong views on guns. Well, “strong views on guns” doesn’t exactly say what those views ARE, does it? Bad writing or just an effort to mislead?

Something else that has not been mentioned is that the weapon was an assault shotgun. It became an assault shotgun when it was used to assault someone. If he had brought in a baseball bat and hit someone with it, it would have been an assault bat.

Just like when a Democrat gets arrested, they don’t note his party affiliation…

Ace of Spades has a long list of these things – shooting happens, left blames TEA Party/GOP/Conservatives, scrubs all references to kook leftism. Its amazing how many you won’t remember until Ace reminds you.

      • Amazona December 15, 2013 / 11:15 am

Here is a little more info on the shooter. (BTW, in a move I heartily endorse, the sheriff refuses to name him, saying that he deserves no recognition, no fame of any sort.)

“In one Facebook post, Pierson attacks the philosophies of economist Adam Smith, who through his invisible-hand theory pushed the notion that the free market was self-regulating. In another post, he describes himself as “Keynesian.”

“I was wondering to all the neoclassicals and neoliberals, why isn’t the market correcting itself?” he wrote. “If the invisible hand is so strong, shouldn’t it be able to overpower regulations?”

Pierson also appears to mock Republicans on another Facebook post, writing “you republicans are so cute” and posting an image that reads: “The Republican Party: Health Care: Let ’em Die, Climate Change: Let ’em Die, Gun Violence: Let ’em Die, Women’s Rights: Let ’em Die, More War: Let ’em Die. Is this really the side you want to be on?”

School cameras show that the shooter was in the school less than a minute and a half. He walked in, shot a girl in the head as she sat near the door with friends, and headed into the school. A school janitor called in the lock-down and the ARMED deputy on duty in the school immediately headed toward the area. On his way, he heard the gunfire. When the shooter realized he was up against an ARMED responder, he shot himself.

In spite of the planning on the shooter’s part that included three incendiary devices (we are waiting to hear the brand name on the bottles he used to make his Molotov cocktails, so we can ban them as “assault bottles”) and many shotgun shells, as well as a machete (an “assault blade”) there was only one casualty. It is quite reasonable to assume that without the intervention of an ARMED responder, the casualty toll would have been much higher.

Isn’t today the day of Gore’s “Ice Free Arctic Ocean” prediction five year anniversary? I remember the hype in the msm when that came out.

Today not a peep. Why? 😛

Maybe someone that lives near there could help us out and verify that. I would ask Gore himself but rumor has it he is sitting in his sea side villa in California counting humongous stacks of 100 dollar bills.
