Almost

Just an inch the other way and we’d be plunged into nationwide political violence this evening.

They call us racists.

They call us Nazis.

They call us Fascists.

They call us traitors.

They call us homophobes.

They call us Russian agents.

This is what they did. On purpose. They wanted this to happen. They willed this to happen. And it almost happened.

It is all still very confused – we only know for certain that Trump is ok and at least one poor, innocent American is dead. There are rumors that the shooter is dead, as well.

Who the lunatic was is immaterial in the grand scheme of things. Obviously an insane person. Connected to the Left? That remains to be seen – but the reason this person opened fire is because of the hate-filled rhetoric that has come from the Democrats, Biden on down, without ceasing for years.

In November comes the reckoning.

UPDATE:

His name was Corey Comperatore, 50 years old. Father, firefighter…but, also and most importantly, just a man. A man who worked hard and tried to do the right thing. He’s a hundred different men I know. Dead now because a Leftist lunatic killed him – after years of Democrats saying that Trump and MAGA are racist, Nazi existential threats to Our Democracy. And don’t fall for the MSM spin going on right now – they’re trying to say the shooter was a Republican because of a voter registration document…but the more that comes out the more it shows he was a far-Left fanatic.

We’re still short on details as the government busies itself scrubbing social media and working out their best strategy to distance Democrats from this crime. But there is no real mystery here – a leftist lunatic tried to murder President Trump and did manage to murder Comperatore, and seriously injure two others. Showing the true spirit of America, the Go Fund Me set up by the Trump campaign has already raised more than $1.2 million for the victims.

But that doesn’t bring Comperatore back. Nothing can. His family has lost him forever. This man who was supposed to grow old surrounded by his family is now gone.

Let’s hope that the reckoning waits for November, and that the response is massive and unequivocal.

Prayers to anyone killed or wounded, and their families. Other thoughts.

    1. I’m guessing that within a short period of time after the gunman was shot & identified, numerous government agencies were quick to delve into everything they can find about him. It will be interesting to see if he acted alone or in together with others.
    • I was in Atlanta many years back on business. On Sunday morning before any conference meetings, I walked around downtown. That afternoon there was a scheduled presidential political rally. The whole area for blocks away were barracked, with a multitude of security personal checking potential areas of concern, bomb sniffing dogs, snippers on roof tops, all elevated positions in nearby buildings were being secured with forced closed windows, etc. While I’m guessing there was a similar level of security for this rally, it’s likely there were several things missing, protocols not adhered to, lax performances, etc. Not sure if there are heads that will roll or if someone is made a scapegoat.
    •  After the Pope was shot, his vehicle was built with bullet proof glass. Even at Presidential Inaugurations there are bullet proof glass partitions. I can see how this might be implemented.
    • Not sure how this incident will impact Trump’s campaign schedule going forward but it will likely take at least a few days, if not more, to assess and make whatever necessary changes that are deemed important. We can especially be sure there will be ramped up security at the Republican convention next week.
    • Given that Trump has not yet announced his VP pick, I wonder if this incident will have any impact on that person’s willingness to accept. Doesn’t seem likely they will now decline but it does make one pause to understand the potential ramifications.

Also, I wonder just how this will impact democrat politicians. It’s gotta make several of them nervous about the fallout, even if they’re not directly involved. Indirectly, many of them and their Hollywood compadres are very complicit, from their constant verbal attacks openly wishing for such an event, to their hate filled venom, to their continuous attacks on legal fronts, to their never ending smear attacks with created evidence & lies.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the minds of the voting public. The lawfare attacks against have backfired massively as has the very public exposure of Bidum’s condition.

    • jdge's avatar jdge1 July 13, 2024 / 9:58 pm

I also wonder how this will impact foreign relations, if any. Any time a head of state or potential head of state has an assassination attempt on his or her life, especially someone from world leading country, there will be ripples. It wouldn’t surprise me if one (some) of Trump’s foreign adversaries (Ukraine president??), were involved. No doubt several of them are worried that Trump keep getting stronger as Bidum falters.

In a TV interview, one of the attendee’s said they saw the shooter minutes before the incident and kept pointing to the rooftop directing the attention of the police / secret service on the ground to that area. If true, that suggests a serious laps in action and heads should roll.

    More thought…

Through the grace of God Trump sustained only minor injuries. With the number of shots taken in quick succession, to the fact that one of the bullets grazed his ear, it’s truly a miracle Trump is alive. To the others who died or sustained injury, heartfelt prayers. There is an online fund raising for these people that has already reached 6 figures.

I imagine this will have an impact on how Trump runs his Presidency and who he nominates to his team, if elected. But there are many steps from here to there, and from there to being sworn in that need to transpire before he takes office.

It is absurd that a gunman would be able to station himself on a rooftop only 130 yards away. I’ve no idea if this oversight was due to a lack of resources or poor planning but after repeatedly watching this unfold on TV it is evident that the Secret Service performed poorly on many levels. How the heck was that building not secured? Apparently, Trump’s security team had previously requested additional Secret Service agents and was turned down by the director of that agency, Kimberly Cheatle. She should be brought before the Congressional House to answer questions.

In this day and age, I wonder why drones were not used to survey the area? A real sniper could easily hit their mark from a considerably longer distance.

There should be heat brought against all of those who publicly made comments about harming Trump or one of his family members. Earlier this week Bidum made a comment saying there should be a target on Trump. They can claim it was just “heated in-the-moment rhetoric” but I’ll bet a good many of them really meant what they said. I wouldn’t be surprised if one (or more) of them, especially the Hollywood buffoons, said something like; “They’re really sorry to see this happen….  how could that gunman miss from such a short distance?” Cowards… everyone of them.

At this point it’s anyone’s guess how democrat politicians (and anti-Trump RINO’s) will act. I imagine they’re on pins & needles realizing their every remark is being recorded and will be used against them should they feel bold enough to continue with their hate filled malevolence.

If you see the enlarged version of the photo at the top of Mark’s post, it looks like the bullet grazed his cheek either before or after clipping his ear. That really is a miracle. Several of us have made the comment that throughout history God has used deeply flawed people for his purposes, the Apostle Paul being the prime example. At the very least, Trump was the right man at the right time in 2016, Whether you want to chalk up yesterday’s miracle to God’s grace or just to fate, it’s clear Trump has unfinished work to do.

      • jdge's avatar jdge1 July 14, 2024 / 7:03 am

I believe the blood on his cheek is what came from his ear when he ducked behind the podium. At least the reports are only alluding to his ear being hit. Amazing to see him exit his plane in the early morning hours as though it’s just another day.

Damn good thing he turned his head when he did. I’ve shot paper targets with an AR-15 at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards with a red-dot sight with no magnification, and I can shoot about a 4″ group at 150 yards, and that’s with cheap range ammo, 80-year-old eyes and trifocals. The last time I went out shooting I put two rounds through the same hole at 100 yards. The rifle in the photo on Malone’s Substack looks like an AR-10, which uses the larger, more powerful 7.62X51 NATO round (168 grains vs. 68 grains), and the scope looks pretty sophisticated as well. I’m guessing even a mediocre shooter could consistently shoot a 1 or 2″ group with that gun at 150 yards.

      • Retired Spook's avatar Retired Spook July 15, 2024 / 12:17 pm

Looks like I misinterpreted the photo. I thought it was a photo of a police officer holding up the shooter’s rifle. I saw this photo today, and it shows two police snipers (not a Secret Service, unless SS have “police” on the back of their vest). Virtually every news outlet is reporting that the shooter used an “AR-15 style rifle”, no photos that I could find, and I’ll bet we will never see a photo of it.

Glenn Beck had as a guest this morning on his radio show the Canadian Special Forces soldier who holds the record for the longest sniper kill shot ever recorded (3,450 meters). He said something is grossly wrong with the information that’s been released so far. This is a paraphrase, but pretty close. He said any kid who has ever played the Call of Duty video game could tell you that a nearby water tower and the roof where the shooter fired from were the two most obvious sniper positions. He said he didn’t think that the way things played out could be explained by incompetence.

Astounding what crap the legacy media comes up with. Anyone wonder why so many people distrust them (and so many others adhere to every word).

CBS new personal Margaret Brennan attacks Trump for not urging calm after he was shot.

I dumped cable but found a couple of mainstream outlets like NBC on my streaming providers, and one of them really surprised me when she commented on how relatively calm the crowd remained. It was not just a passing comment—she went into some detail about how so many injuries in situations like this are caused by panicked crowds, and how this crowd remained calm and in control.

I was talking back to her, saying “Yes, because they are conservatives. If you want a herd of screeching hysterics go to a Democrat rally–though you won’t find much of a crowd”.

Even the Secret Service had to weasel-word their report. You might think it would mention that the former president was actually, you know, SHOT during this incident.

During Former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue. U.S. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. U.S. Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and Former President Trump is safe. One spectator was killed, and two spectators were critically injured. This incident is currently under investigation. and the Secret Service has notified the FBI.

Even the Secret Service had to weasel-word their report.

If it turns out, as I’ve seen reported elsewhere, that the shooter was taken out by a police sniper and not the Secret Service, then the statement is more than just weasel words.

Just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that the most obvious place to take a shot was unguarded.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Cheatle served as Senior Director in Global Security at PepsiCo. Her role at PepsiCo involved developing risk management assessment and risk mitigation.

She is white and apparently was born a woman, so she is lacking a couple of the characteristics of a true DEI hire, unless she has expressed ‘woke’ opinions. But she sure dropped the ball here, or rather the agent in charge of this particular detail did.

The incendiary rhetoric from Democrats over the last 4 years is a big part of why this happened, and they need to be held accountable and to apologize. BUT, the irresponsible actions of the Ruling Class also plays a huge role, and that is the deeper threat. Our younger generations have little hope in this country … their education is abysmal, their career opportunities are limited, and their life is unaffordable … all because our Ruling Class has sold out Americans for personal profit. We need to dismantle the government, the Ruling Class, and the Media, and overhaul Education if we are to turn this country around. It’s a YUGE task, but the rewards will be worth it. TRUMP 2024

He is the only one in the race who has actual experience in a war zone, working daily with a SEAL team and being responsible for evaluating (from a legal standpoint) every mission assigned to it before approving it—in other words, what they call a “shot caller’ with actual experience in making life-or-death decisions for military personnel. We know the constant call for the elimination of Trump was not simply rhetoric. The question now becomes, will they continue it or temper their words regardless of their true feelings? Supposedly Bidum is pulling ads comparing Trump to Hitler and call him a dictator. We’ll see if the media continues to endorse this by printing it. Can such talk be ground for legal repercussions? I doubt it, or at least to any amount that will make a difference. Still, I doubt many people realize how precarious this really is and what would have happened if the attempt was successful.

Seth Dillon – If Trump were as bad as Biden and other Democrats say he is — if he were a tyrant on par with Hitler himself — then why would they be grateful to hear he’s safe and doing well? Either their characterizations of Trump are false or their sympathy is.

Comedian and host Dave Smith similar said, “How the f**k can you say he’s literally Hitler and Democracy is on the line but we wish him a speedy recovery and political violence is never acceptable?”

James Wood – We were two inches away from a civil war today. It is not a prospect I relish, but one that is to be feared if Democrats don’t stop with their absurd vile Hitler analogies and their assassination glee.

Cartoonist Scott Adams on Twitter wrote, “The Biden campaign is pausing its ad campaign that was obviously designed to get Trump assassinated.  The Fine People Hoax probably just killed one spectator, injured another, and almost ended Trump. This is all on Biden.

By the time anything said by Trump is run through the Insanity Filters of the rabid Left it means whatever they want it to mean. Just look at that unhinged screed casper posted a couple of days ago, fawning over its alleged brilliance, when it was nothing but a collection of lies or selected snippets of words taken out of context to create lies. This is the carrion on which they feed. This is the kind of thing that prompted my mental image of them as flies drawn to the slit trench latrines in which the Left relieves itself because of a passion for the stench and filth.

It is this kind of thing that turns “peaceably and patriotically” into “violently take over the government and assume its powers”. It’s this kind of thing that turns “petition Congress to temporarily postpone certification for ten days to allow some time to investigate” into “overturn a legitimate election”. It’s this kind of freeform redefinition of words that lets the Left find whatever negative or sinister meaning they need to promote their narrative even in the most innocuous words, even in words that are the opposite of the meanings they attributed to them.

I’ve come to think of affiliation with today’s Left as a litmus test of character. There was a time when a Democrat and a Republican had the same basic goals, and differed only in how large a role the federal government should play in achieving them. But Democrats of those days were not drooling primitive savages who willingly, gleefully, abandoned their God-given innate intelligence in favor of adopting beliefs so patently false, and so transparently evil, that they simply cannot coexist with sanity and decency.

I know I am hard on casper and call him stupid, and that might sound harsh. I never criticize people who are organically stupid, whose brains simply do not function at a very high level. But I have total contempt for people who have the basic tools of intelligence but squander them, waste them, in exchange for adopting beliefs that defy cognition, and that is a subset of “stupid’ I have no problem in calling out and ridiculing. casper, for example, has a basic level of intelligence—he was able to qualify for some kind or level of professional credentials, he is moderately literate, he can function pretty well—he is not organically deficient. But he has allowed the most negative aspects of his character to take over the responsibility for using that God-given core intelligence and thrown it away for the base visceral pleasures of wallowing in hateful negativity that can only exist in the void created by lack of honest intellect. I see the same pattern in these other people, who mouth the most utterly stupid, utterly insane, but utterly hate-driven fantasies.

And they are fantasies. Delusions are what people truly believe. These are fantasies, what these people want and need to believe to be consistent with their characters.

All my support and solidarity to President and candidate Donald Trump, victim of a COWARDLY assassination attempt that put his life and that of hundreds of people at risk.

The desperation of the international left is not surprising, as today it sees its harmful ideology expire, and is willing to destabilize democracies and promote violence to screw itself into power. In fear of losing at the polls, they resort to terrorism to impose their retrograde and authoritarian agenda.

I hope for the speedy recovery of President Trump and that the elections in the United States are held fairly, peacefully and democratically.

I have been talking about the International Left for years now, and it is good to see it identified here. We can’t think of our domestic Left as merely an American construct—-it is an extension of the International Left. I have often commented on my belief that it has become a little too big for its britches, too cocky, too full of hubris when it achieves a goal, and so has gotten out over its skis and become too obvious and blatant and eventually self-destructive, while the International Left is patient and calculating and probably wishing the American Left would back off a little.

The latest entry in the YCMTSU file:

‘We do not currently have an identified motive,’ Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, said at a briefing late Saturday night, according to CBS News.

    • Mark Noonan's avatar Mark Noonan July 14, 2024 / 2:58 pm

Then Pudding Brain comes out and says “don’t assume a motive”…which means, of course, they know that the motive was a Leftwing nutjob wanting to kill Trump.

I mean, sometimes the motive is kinda easy to pick out…this wasn’t a case of a guy murdering his business partner to get all the money. Trump was shot at: there’s precisely one reason someone would do that – they hate him.

Now, the reasons why he hated Trump may be varied and may be downright insane…but what worries the Dems is that he’s got a manifesto somewhere saying he’s going to do it to save Our Democracy…like the TV told him to.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 14, 2024 / 3:11 pm

They’ve certainly tried to hide or deny other manifestos that have come to light, explaining the motives of other mass shooters.

But it’s pretty brazen to stand there and say that a man who is the target of relentless hatred on a level never seen before in American politics, who poses a threat to the retention of power by the Left, who is leading a political campaign and speaking at a political rally, who is the target of an attempted assassination, was not targeted for a political motive.

Poor Kevin Rojek, sent out to wear the dunce cap to protect the Left. I hope he held out for serious compensation for sacrificing his dignity like that. Though they can later quibble and explain that by “identified motive’ they meant a notarized statement witnessed by four people including a member of the clergy.

Eyewitnesses report 2 shooters. The one that was shot and a 2nd on the opposite side of the stage on a house rooftop. This seems to be collaborated by more than 1 person. Wonder why this is not on the news and if true, how the Secret Service / federal agencies continue to drop the ball. Is it incompetence, lack of training, lack of support (can’t imagine at this point), or a cover-up? There were questions early on if this was someone working alone or a concerted effort. Seems the media is currently going with a lone gunman, but I get the feeling there’s far more to this than what’s being told. Any lack of transparency will generate sever repercussions.

And the media are so reliable, we should take their word for anything? ANYTHING?

  11. jdge's avatar jdge1 July 14, 2024 / 9:17 pm

“A source within the Secret Service community tells RealClearPolitics that the agency rules of engagement in this situation are to wait until the president is fired upon to return fire,” Crabtree said on Twitter.

I’m having a really hard time believing this is “standard” protocol, especially when dealing with protection detail of the President or major contender. All perceived threats should be put down “immediately” -and/or- the person you’re supposed to protect should be alerted and removed from the threat.

“You want to take a shot then find out the guy was holding a telescope?” the source suggested. “The Secret Service is by nature reactive…and you better be right when you do react or you’re f—–d.”

This kind of statement is nothing but an effort to cover their butt. The building was not secured. Shooter advanced to a close by rooftop with a rifle. Several attendees made reference to the sighting several minutes BEFORE the shots were fired. Counter snipers have scopes and should have accurately assessed the situation BEFORE shots were fired. Just the presence of an unknown person in an elevated position with a gun would have been enough to call for the ground crew to secure Trump. Just wait and see if he fires first?? Who need protection like that?

    • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 10:04 am

That’s not protection, that’s after-event apprehension. Those scopes would let the government shooter read the serial number on the assassin’s scope–if people on the ground could tell it was a rifle, experienced snipers could tell.

Though I can see where this guy is coming from, after the fallout and actual imprisonment of law enforcement officers for their actions. The thing is, a protective detail has to be proactive, not reactive, There is no reason to believe the Secret Service has not fallen victim to the same squishiness that has infected our other law enforcement and military arms, as the military has seen ROEs become so restrictive that they are crippling.

But really—-these days someone is going to carry around a long old-style telescope? Like Long John Silver?

    • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 10:09 am

That’s an interesting video, but one thing I get from it is that some people should not be allowed to take videos. I wonder if the government sniper was watching this guy crawl across the roof, obviously trying to remain hidden, and still didn’t consider him a threat.

    • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 10:22 am

A local police officer reportedly confronted would-be assassin Thomas Crooks moments before he took aim at former President Donald Trump.

According to the Associated Press, rallygoers who noticed Crooks on the roof less than 150 yards from where Trump was speaking alerted police, with one officer climbing a ladder to investigate.

The gunman had his father’s AR-style rifle and was perched atop a nearby roof when some rallygoers pointed him out to local law enforcement, said two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal probe.

A local law enforcement officer climbed to the roof and found Crooks, who pointed the rifle at the officer. The officer then retreated down the ladder, and the gunman quickly fired toward Trump, the officials said. That’s when U.S. Secret Service gunmen shot him, the officials said. (AP)

“Local law enforcement officer’. Not a Secret Service agent. I wonder if the government sniper, who allegedly had this guy in his sights and was just waiting for him to shoot at the president before taking him out, thought he was pointing a telescope at the local cop. I would think pointing a rifle at a cop while perched in a place perfect for shooting at the president would spark some interest and maybe even a response—but then I am not part of a federal agency under the control of the Biden Administration.

This story does indicate that the LOCAL law enforcement officer’s actions might have saved Trump’s life, if his appearance at the top of that ladder rattled the gunman and caused him to fire “quickly” instead of taking better aim.

A commenter named Mongoose, who obviously has experience, posted a great and informative comment on the article about Secret Service also having to cover Jill Biden that same day.

The Secret Service uses four types of “temps” or fill-ins on these details, all supplementing the permanent detail. 1) Agents from the local field office. They’re normally doing investigative work but that mostly gets dropped when a protectee comes to town. 2) Agents from other DHS agencies on detail – generally in election years. USSS is big but they don’t have the manpower to cover all the candidates running (in normal years when they actually try to cover the candidates. Sorry, RFK.) These would be volunteers from HSI, ICE, and TSA (not the people at the airport checkpoints, the special agents and air marshals). 3) State and local officers from departments in the area. They also might have pulled Secret Service agents from other offices for TDYs on detail, the fourth possibility.

In past years – before 2003 – when Secret Service was in Treasury, agents from ATF, Customs, IRS-CID, and IRS-Inspection, all of whom have been through the same training at FLETC with USSS, would all provide the extra coverage in the second category during election years.

I wasn’t aware that the Secret Service had been moved from Treasury to DHS. It was pretty obvious that that older chunky woman near the exfil SUV had no training at all. She was panicky, had no idea of what to do or where to go, and didn’t even know how to holster her weapon. (That shoulder rig looked pretty cool, but they require practice.)

From what I’ve read, local authorities often provide a bulk of security at these kind of events. Supposedly there’s a lot of coordination, but even then I suspect there’s a disconnect. For one, I’m guessing they work off of different radio frequencies, unless the feds temporarily provide locals with equipment. Thought they likely have different responsibilities, having a command center to help unify communications & split decision calls would seem crucial. After watching this unfold it would seem not to be the case.

“This moment in history is significant,” said Mr. James (former Secret Service Agent). “President Trump was half an inch away from losing his life. If this assassination attempt would have been successful, I don’t know who the Republicans would have put on stage this week at the convention.”

Interesting question. Previously it seems like a good idea for Trump to withhold his VP pick until the convention. While the convention starts tomorrow and it seems likely Trump will make that announcement in the next few days. This might be crucial in getting behind a replacement candidate if any future attempts are successful, though I sure hope security detail is FAR more prepared.

Given that I don’t see these attacks ending any time soon (certain segments of the left are already pushing the limits again), especially if (when) Trump wins the election, my choice for VP would be DeSantis. I see him as the most capable person stepping right into the roll in any emergency situation and fulfilling the things we hope from Trump, and then some. Some here have mentioned their like for Gabbard but that to me if far too risky. She is certainly smart, articulate and has broken away from leftist extremism but… it is unknown if she will advance the conservative agenda of smaller government or will steer back to her version of center. With DeSantis his positions are clear and his background is well suited to handle the position.

I’m with you, regarding DeSantis. Whenever I see other names suggested for VP it seems to me that the most important criterion for being VP—the ability to BE president—is overlooked. I look at all these people and I see a lot of talent, an ability to bring in more votes, a lot of charisma, but what I don’t see is a president. Of all the people named, only DeSantis strikes me as the guy who can tackle the jobs, deal with China and Russia, take on the Deep State, etc. I hope Trump sees it that way.

    The tide continues to turn.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon formally dismissed the federal charges against former President Donald Trump for allegedly withholding White House documents on Monday, ruling Special Counsel Jack Smith was unlawfully appointed—the latest in a series of blows to criminal cases against the former president.

This sure seem like an illegal attempt by government to confiscate private land. I hope it’s shot down by the courts.

    • Under the guise of “land protection,” the federal government aims to acquire 700,000 acres of private land in the Southern High Plains region—which sits along the Texas-New Mexico border.

    • This is part of the federal government’s efforts to expand the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge—which feeds into the broader aim of the Biden administration: fulfilling the 30×30 initiative.

    • Through the 30×30 initiative, the Biden administration decided that 30 percent of the nation’s land and waters must be under federal control and management by 2030. President Biden launched the agenda via executive order on January 27, 2021.
    • “After listing two species as endangered in the region they are now providing the solution for landowners to deal with the coming land use restrictions – sell the land to the Federal government or sell a conservation easement forever committing that land to the Refuge. Removing 700,000 private acres will permanently erode agriculture production, oil and gas development, and the local economy.” – American Stewards of Liberty Executive Director Margaret Byfield

They are pulling the same crap in SW Wyoming, on land that is (I am sure coincidentally) oil and gas and mining land.

The keys words in all of these federal power grabs is EXECUTIVE ORDER.

If there is nothing delegated to the Executive Branch that addresses or covers acts like this, then they would be considered “unlawful” and therefore not covered by presidential immunity. If you want to prosecute a president, I guess you’d better make sure your own slate is clean first.

Lots of unanswered questions about the assassination attempt, and they will mostly go unanswered until after 1/20/2025. If by some weird turn of events Trump doesn’t take office on 1/20/25, then they will be buried in the same black hole as the JFK files, and will never be answered.

Shit. I just saw that Trump named JD Vance as his VP. This makes no sense to me at all, and appears to be more of his old bad decision-making. Vance has no experience at all, other than a couple of years in Congress.

    • Retired Spook's avatar Retired Spook July 15, 2024 / 3:24 pm

He wouldn’t have been my first pick, or second, or third, but he’s been one of the strongest pro-Trump public voices in the last couple of years. Time will tell.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 3:49 pm

I’d like to think that being “pro-Trump’ is not the main criterion, but it appears to be. He’s been a Senator for almost two years, never been a governor, so has limited exposure to legislation. Now he needs to be replaced in the Senate. He’s smart, he’s likable and that puts him right in the middle of a pack of smart, likable people, none of whom are qualified to step in a president of the United States. I’m just tired of the Trump roller coaster, developing real enthusiasm for him and then being disappointed in his judgement.

    • jdge's avatar jdge1 July 15, 2024 / 7:13 pm

I agree. Vance has previously displayed a liberal mindset on many topics, and still does on some. Hopefully that’s changes quickly. In retrospect, I also expected Trump to be somewhat liberal minded (still lightyears in front of Hillary) when he was first elected, based on his background and associations. some suggest Vance is a “bulldog”, which could be both good and bad. IF he uses that energy to block the crap we know is waiting for Trump if / when elected, then it will be he may yet show his worth.

I hope Trump is more diligent in picking cabinet members and every bit as important, fire and replace the head of many federal agencies. I’m guess they know their days are numbered if Trump is elected.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 9:17 pm

Does anyone think that if that bullet had taken Trump out that Vance would then have been the nominee? No. He’s still a lightweight and, as you say, leans Left.

I think Trump owed it to us to put together the toughest and most focused and skilled ticket possible, not a feel-good ticket with someone who will never challenge him. And he has screwed the GOP by setting up another battle in four years for the presidency, instead of putting DeSantis in who could probably have stepped right into the 2028 nomination. Now it’s going to be more infighting.

Vance doesn’t have the chops to take on the Bureaucratic State, the Administrative State. whatever you want to call it. Every day is going to be a learning curve because he just doesn’t know much.

Trump had the opportunity to put together the strongest and most successful presidency in history, and he bailed. He had the chance to run a Trump/DeSantis campaign and have the toughest and most skilled VP possibly in history, and setting up a 12-year dynasty, and he dropped the ball. He may have a “bulldog” defending him personally, but he should have been looking for more than a wing man. I’m now not looking forward to this campaign as I was.

Well, my hope for a Trump who has learned his lessons is a lot less bright than it was a couple of days ago. Right now it’s more “ho-hum—same old Trump, three steps forward two steps back”.

    • Mark Noonan's avatar Mark Noonan July 15, 2024 / 8:54 pm

      Wasn’t my first, either!

But, it is what it is.

Keep something in mind: Vance would have agreed to take the slot due to 2028 ambitions (at least in part). That means he knows he’s got to lock down MAGA…and he can only do that by being MAGA over the next 4 years. He might surprise us like Trump did after 2016.

      • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 9:26 pm

And just what would make Vance qualified to be president in four years? For that matter, what would make him qualified if another shot is taken at Trump and this one succeeds? I thought Saturday gave us a vivid lesson in what we need for a VP—someone who can step in right away, if necessary. And we got the equivalent of an intern, who may or may not learn enough to be competent..

    so where is Casper hiding?

    • Amazona's avatar Amazona July 15, 2024 / 3:53 pm

He’s hoping our attention span is as short as his, and that he can creep out of his hidey-hole and pretend that he never dodged questions, never claimed Biden was “on top of his game” etc. He’ll come slithering back with some inane comment meant to make him sound erudite, and fail as usual. He’s probably having a rough Monday, with Joey and the Bimbo off TV for the day so he has to figure out what he thinks on his own—though he does have the two charming Joys to lead him around.
