The Palin Effect?

Been seeing a lot of things like this over at NRO’s The Corner – we won’t know if its a general trend for a month or so, but its exactly what I expect from the Palin selection:

To: Kathryn Lopez

Subject: So Excited!

K-Lo –

I am absolutely thrilled with McCain’s choice in Palin. Her conservative values, her reform efforts, the way she worked up from being in the PTA to a governor all show that she has what it takes. She is the commander of the Alaska National Guard. She is a mom, a member of the PTA, an athlete, has worked for a living in non-political jobs. She seems like one of us. She seems like one tough cookie, yet is still incredibly likable. That is something that Hillary could never pull off. I am so excited that I sent $500 to the McCain campaign today. I would send more, but I think that is all my budget can handle right now. I am happy he picked a woman. But, I am thrilled it is this woman!

GO McCAIN PALIN 2008!!!

I was visiting the Mother-in-Law on Saturday and while outside for a while another person just wandered up and offered a pro-McCain opinion…an elderly woman, delighted with McCain, delighted with Palin. Outside of Leftwing Kookdom, the selection of Palin is being greeted with enthusiasm…and all the leftwing slanders and smears being directed her way shows the fear she strikes in the hearts of Obamaniacs who see it all slipping away…the Obamessiah washed away by a flood of competance.

Pro-Life Democrats

Showing you can be liberal in a lot of things and yet remain committed to the intrinsic, God-given value of each human life:

The Democrats for Life town hall meeting on Wednesday in Denver, in addition to policy proposals and cultural analysis, examined the consequences of abortion, naming the abortion-related risks of domestic violence, infertility, and cancer as reasons to advocate abortion reduction programs.

Colorado State Senator Debbie Stafford, a former Republican with a background in religious ministry and domestic violence counseling, discussed the relation of domestic violence to abortion while Rev. Clenard Childress, pastor of the New Calvary Baptist Church in Montclair, New Jersey and president of the Life Education and Resource Network (LEARN), discussed abortion’s devastating effects in the African-American community.

“No woman will abort unless she has a sense of abandonment and rejection,” Stafford said. Domestic violence doesn’t “just happen,” and pregnant women are 25 to 50 percent more likely to be abused than a non-pregnant woman, she explained.

Stafford added that sometimes a woman undergoes an abortion just to please her partner.

“When a pregnant woman involved in an abusive or destructive relationship finds herself with an unplanned pregnancy, one of the ways that she believes she can maintain what we call the ‘traumatic-emotional bond’ with her abuser is to allow her baby to be aborted.”

Further, she has discovered that “men hurt too,” and can come “literally unglued” because their pregnant partner used the possible abortion of the baby as a “wedge” between them or as a way to punish the man.

“It took two people to create that child,” she said, noting that both men and women in abusive relationships need support.

Rev. Childress discussed the negative consequences of abortion especially as related to the African-American community, claiming abortion affects African-Americans “more than any other ethnic group in the country.” He cited CDC statistics showing that one in two pregnant African-American women choose to abort.

The African-American birth rate, he said, is at 1.97 children per women, less than the 2.1 replacement rate. African-American women now lead the country in miscarriages due to “using abortion as a contraceptive,” which weakens the uterine lining.

“When they want to have a child, they cannot,” Rev. Childress explained with sadness.

Margaret Sanger – the racist, eugenicist founder of Planned Parenthood – woud be pleased; her plan is working to perfection; black people are breeding less, thanks to abortion. What still staggers the mind is that black Americans have a strong belief that GOPers are racist and that liberal Democrats are on their side…when what liberals are really doing is destroying the black family, and butchering unborn black children. We won’t break this in 2008 – with a completely understandable sense of pride that one of their own has risen to the top, black Americans will go nearly universally Democrat in November…but, win or lose, the opportunity is there for both the GOP to gain black adherents in later years, as well as for black Democrats to force their party away from their hateful, despairing – and functionally racist – attachment to abortion on demand.

Future generations of Americans will look back at our time and stand aghast that we, once upon a time, allowed tens of millions of our fellow Americans to be murdered before they were born. As today we puzzle over how some Americans once upon a time considered it good to enslave other Americans so, too, will our grandchildren puzzle over our tolerance of a practice which is never necessay and always harmful to two human beings – the murdered child, and the violated mother. And I pray that what will really start the ball rolling towards an end to legal abortion is the recoil of honest liberals away from the pro-abortion position…a growing understanding even on the left that each human life is precious in and of itself.

Meanwhile, In That War Obama Wanted Us to Lose…

Life starts to surge in Iraq:

Pool Reopening Symbolizes Return to Normalcy in Northern Baghdad

“One of the first patrols we went on was to go assess this pool,” said Army Capt. Clint Rusch, a Multinational Division Baghdad fire-support officer.

Rusch, who along with his unit began operations here in early February, described the scene at the compound. Putrid-smelling water filled the three pools. A concession stand was decrepit, and an outer wall was crumbling, he said.

After that initial patrol, Rusch conferred with Army Maj. Olaf Shibusawa, Steel Company’s civil affairs officer, and started hatching a plan of how to make changes there.

Major renovations included repairing the outer wall, remodeling shower rooms and refurbishing the concession stand. Once the other details were decided upon, a contract was awarded and work began in early March. But after hostilities flared up in Sadr City in late March, work was halted for five weeks.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 26 marked the official reopening of the complex, but its doors have been able to remain open for business during refurbishment, collecting about $2 per admission. The accompanying pool hall also remains open and is a popular hangout for residents.

“Our contractor didn’t want to drain the pool completely when kids are still using it, so he was able to set it up so the kids could swim while construction was going on. They were working 24 hours a day on the project,” Rusch said.

“The perfect end state would be that the project becomes self-sufficient – it doesn’t require any American influence to be able to continue,” Rusch said. “We want the community to have the ability to experience a part of childhood that every kid should have,” he said.

Never, never, never forget that Obama wanted that last US soldier out of Iraq on March 31st…in service of an absurd, leftwing political dogma that America at war is always wrong, Obama urged us to surrender Iraq to the terrorists and their Iranian masters, while John McCain – standing forthright for country over politics – urged us to fight on until victory. This, in and of itself, demonstrates that McCain is ready to be President, while Obama still isn’t even ready to be a Senator.

Obama's Two Nations

Victor Davis Hanson nails it, as usual:

If Obama were to win, no one would infer from the desolation he described in America, that he may well inherit an economy, in a downturn, that just grew at 3.3 in the last quarter, an unemployment rate of 5.7%, and record levels of exportation, one that did not go into recession with $140 a barrel oil, with more students in college than at any time in its history and more than any other nation in the world, with a war in Iraq nearly won, and both the Taliban and Saddam Hussein gone and replaced with constitutional governments — and Europe, whether in France, Germany, or Italy, with strong pro-American leadership.

No one would infer that after our enemies blew a 16-acre crater in New York and attacked the Pentagon — and promised lots more to come — we have not been hit since, but in contrast, al Qaeda’s leaders are either in hiding, scattered, imprisoned, or killed, with bin Laden and the tactic of suicide bombing with record low levels of support in the Middle East.

His bottom line: our enemies are winning, AK-47s are ubiquitous in our streets, our economy is in depression, and gay people can’t visit their dying partners in our hospitals. In short, “Hope and Change” has became gloom and doom and there is something for everybody from government to save us.

This message, I’ll point out, has been a loser for the Democrats – with the exception of 1992, when there was a split GOP vote allowing a Democrat to slip in under the wire. Will it work in 2008? Perhaps – and if it does, then so be it. People get the government they deserve, and if Obama wins they’ll get it good and hard.

Now the attention will turn to McCain – though the MSM will try to keep at least some of the attention on Obama through the next week. McCain’s task is difficult but also rather simple – keep pointing out that he has real plans backed by real experience, while Obama has highflying rhetoric backed by nothing. In this anti-GOP year, the only Democrat who can lose is Obama, and the only GOPer who can win is John McCain, and as of right now I don’t know which man will win, which is odd for me because, on Presidential elections, I’m usually able to pick out the winner by this time of year.

As Nevada Pundit pointed out to me earlier, Obama has given McCain plenty of opportunities to pick apart Obama’s speech and cast yet more doubt on whether Obama is in the American mainstream, and whether or not Obama’s plans are grounded in reality, or leftwing wishfull thinking. We’ll see soon if McCain sees his chance and takes them – and we’ll also see whether Obama can razzle-dazzle a majority into blindnes long enough to win in November.

Obama Speech Open Thread

Within the parameters of what Obama might say, does say or has said in the past, have at it, boys and girls.

Errrmmm….you can also make fun of any other Democrat who comes to mind…

UPDATE, 10:12 PM ET: Obama takes the stage.. let the crazy talk begin.

UPDATE, by Matt Margolis: From reading the prepared remarks… I see the same talking points we’ve heard the past few days… the same lame attacks on McCain and Bush…

Guess what Obama, the economy was doing just fine until your party took control of congress.

He’s spent more time attacking John McCain then explaining why he can do anything he claims to do.

UPDATE, 11:28 PM, by Matt Margolis: What sticks out the most about the speech was the negativity. I think it was a major mistake for him to be so negative. He lacked specifics. He attacked John McCain and Republicans endlessly, then claimed to be able to unite the country. Obama could never unite this country.

UPDATE: Media Lizzy posts the McCain campaigns reaction to Obama’s speech.

Associated Press Analysis: Obama spares details, keeps up attacks

UPDATE: From Obama’s speech: “If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.”

Umm, yeah, that pretty much describes what Obama has been doing during his campaign. He has no record to run on, and he’s trying to make people afraid of John McCain. The RNC and McCain campaign should jump on that line.

Whistling Past the Electoral Graveyard?

From Kausfiles:

On the record Time coffee featuring Obama campaign manager David Plouffe: Plouffe argued for paying less attention to the ups and downs of the polls because a) Obama would beat McCain on turnout and b) swing voters would probably break one way or another after the debates. The audience consensus–which in this crowd was almost by definition CW–seemed to be that Plouffe was whistling past the graveyard, relying on turnout machination to make up for a worrisome message problem. … P.S.: Plouffe also said the McCain campaign was “obsessed with news cycles.”

The advantage is still with Obama, but there’s trouble in Obama-land…and the speech tonight with Obamessiah at the Greek Temple might actually be the very worst idea Obama – or his advisors – ever had.

Pro-Life Democrats Abandoning Obama

If you can’t even vote to protect children outside the womb, then there’s not much chance that anyone pro-life will be able to justify a vote for you:

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A new Gallup poll finds pro-life Democrats are abandoning Barack Obama now that more evidence has been presented that Obama takes a hardcore pro-abortion position. The drop in his support from pro-life Democrats also comes as John McCain has been more active promoting his pro-life views.

As the election draws closer and more voters are paying attention to it and learning where the candidates states, a Gallup poll finds pro-life Democrats are less inclined to support Obama.

The Gallup survey shows Democrats who say they are conservative on issues like abortion supported Obama at a 72 percentage point clip in mid-July.

Now, that level of support has fallen to just 63 percent — dropping steadily since then during a time Obama has come under fire nationally for his opposition to a bill to provide medical care for newborns who survive abortion.

Our issues are many in 2008, and each of them takes a piece out of the Obama narrartive. On life issues, Obama is an out-of-the-mainstream supporter of the most extreme, pro-abortion position. On foreign policy, Obama has absolutely zero experience. On defense policy, Obama has absolutely zero experience. On the War on Terrorism, Obama not only has no experience, but has also been proved absolutely wrong on the surge. On economic policy, Obama has nothing but the failed policies of a liberal past. On energy policy, Obama has mostly set aside those concrete steps we can immediately take to ease prices and set the stage for alternative fuels. Each of these issues works against Obama, and each of them will be used – in various ways at various times – against Obama from now until November.

Obama has the money, the friendly media and an anti-GOP sentiment in the nation at large – and yet the chances of him winning are, right now, no better than 50/50. We owe this amazing fact to good campaigning by McCain and the GOP, and the fact that the Democrats nominated the weakest man to be President.

What Media Bias? Part 122

From NRO’s The Corner:

Here in Denver, there were audible cheers in the press pavilion from multiple directions when Barack Obama walked on stage. It’s outside the convention center and no regular delegates are here — only press.

But they won’t let their personal views color their reporting, right?
