Louisianans: Bush Did Better on Katrina than Obama on Oil Spill

Need more proof that Obama has done a piss-poor job handling the oil spill situation? A new Public Policy Polling survey shows that Louisiana voters think Bush did a better job after Katrina.

Our new Louisiana poll has a lot of data points to show how unhappy voters in the state are with Barack Obama’s handling of the oil spill but one perhaps sums it up better than anything else- a majority of voters there think George W. Bush did a better job with Katrina than Obama’s done dealing with the spill.

50% of voters in the state, even including 31% of Democrats, give Bush higher marks on that question compared to 35% who pick Obama.

Overall only 32% of Louisianans approve of how Obama has handled the spill to 62% who disapprove. 34% of those polled say they approved of how Bush dealt with Katrina to 58% who disapproved.

Just goes to show that just because Obama can read off of a TelePrompTer doesn’t mean he knows a damn thing about being an executive. Obama’s incompetence is being seen clearly from both sides of the aisle, and this oil spill response  is pretty much the nail in the coffin of his White House stint.

Greenpeace UK's Rebrand BP contest

Greenpeace UK is running a contest for individuals to “rerand” BP in light of the oil spill.

I certainly agree that BP is at fault for the explosion, etc. but it just seems to me what was being lost in this contest was the lack of government response. Let’s face it, the accident occurred in federal waters, yet Obama has chosen to play golf and go on vacation rather than participate in solving the problem.

So, I decided to make my own entry, that reflects the dual culpability of BP and the Obama administration:

I added the “hopeless” here for emphasis. As you can see, it is a combination of the Obama logo (changing the red striped “hills” into blue striped “water” and putting two slicks of oil between them. BP’s logo, colored yellow, makes the sun on the horizon.

What I would love to find out, is will they post this on their flickr page as an entry when they load today’s entries on it?

If you  like the logo, you can get some merch with it printed on it here.

UPDATE: It was added to their Flickr page this morning

Obama Was Against Oil Spill Clean Up Before He Was For It

This is absolutely incredible.

Three months before the massive BP oil spill erupted in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama administration proposed downsizing the Coast Guard national coordination center for oil spill responses, prompting its senior officers to warn that the agency’s readiness for catastrophic events would be weakened.

[…]

Accidents happen, “but what you’re seeing here is the government is not properly set up to deal with this kind of issue,” said Robbin Laird, a defense consultant who has worked on Coast Guard issues. “The idea that you would even think about getting rid of catastrophic environmental spill equipment or expertise at the Department of Homeland Security, are you kidding me?”

“Cutting a strike team is nuts,” said Stephen Flynn, a former Coast Guard commander and now president of the Center for National Policy, a Washington think tank. “Whether it’s an accident of man or an act of terrorism, it requires almost the exact same skill set to clean it up.”

When you add that to Obama’s “I Don’t Really Care About The Oil Spill” response, you have to ask yourself is this guy grossly incompetent, or just plain stupid.

Meanwhile, as we learned the top kill procedure did no t work to “plug the hole” Obama is resting easy on vacation in Chicago. After all, he can’t let a national catastrophe or Memorial Day ruin his R&R time.

HAT TIP: Rhymes With Right.

Obama Approval at 42 Percent

The “unsinkable” ship is sinking, and sinking fast.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -20 (see trends).

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve.

The Election Year Anti-Obama Wave

The dynamics of this year’s mid-term elections is really quite interesting.

Some Democrats on the campaign trail have hit upon a winning campaign tactic: Run against President Obama and his agenda — especially the health care overhaul.

Democrat Mark Critz railed against the Obama administration’s health care reforms while campaigning in his western Pennsylvania district — and was easily elected to the House.

In West Virginia, Democratic stalwart Rep. Alan B. Mollohan, who voted against an administration-backed energy bill last year, was defeated in his primary after his challenger accused him of not having enough disdain for the measure that was wildly unpopular in his home district. He also was hammered for supporting health care reform.

Rep. Joe Sestak, in Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate primary, challenged the White-House-endorsed five-term incumbent, Sen. Arlen Specter, and was rewarded with a cushy eight percentage-point win.

As Obama sees Democrats distancing themselves from him, he’s decided to run against neither incumbent nor candidate. He’s campaigning against Bush.

President Barack Obama is trying to ride the wave of anti-incumbency by taking on an unpopular politician steeped in the partisan ways of Washington.

It doesn’t matter that George W. Bush left office 16 months ago.

The White House’s mid-term election strategy is becoming clear – pit the Democrats of 2010 against the Republicans circa 2006, 2008 and 2009, including Bush.

It’s a lot to ask an angry, finicky electorate to sort out. And even if Obama can rightfully make the case that the economy took a turn for the worse under Bush’s watch, he’s already made it – in 2008 and repeatedly in 2009.

It’s not clear that voters still want to hear it.

My guess is they won’t. Obama can’t spending nearly two years in office and run against his predecessor. The fact that such a strategy is even considered proves the White House believes Obama and the Democrats don’t have much of a record to run on. And, quite frankly, that would be correct. The economy isn’t getting much better. The unemployment rate still flirts with double digits. Obama’s stimulus failed. Terror attacks in this country were foiled, not by our country’s anti-terror methods, but by mere luck and private citizen intervention. The oil spill in the Gulf gets worse with little interest from Obama. The health care bill remains unpopular.

All kind of makes sense now doesn’t it? Obama has nothing to run on, so he might as well run against Bush, a man whose legacy has only improved in the eyes of Americans since he left office.

Mahalo, Hawaii! Djou wins!

As Mark reported last night, Republican congressional candidate Charles Djou won a special election in Hawaii, filling the vacancy left by Former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie. This historic election gives Hawaii their first REpublican representative in Congress in two decades.

This is great news, although Djou likely faces a similar probably as Joseph Cao in Louisiana, who was elected on a wave of anti-Democrat sentiment following the William Jefferson scandal. This special election is more symbolic at this point. Winning in Democrat-territory is a lot easier in an effective 3-way race  between one Republican and two Democrats. Djou can still do it, but Republicans across the country who supported him with donations can’t get all hot and bothered if he votes in line with his district more than the national GOP.

Primary Night Open Thread

Have at it everyone… I had to bring work from the office home tonight.

Special good lucks go to Timothy Burns, running for John Murtha’s former seat (PA-12), and to Princella Smith (who used to blog here back in the day) in her primary in Arkansas’s First Congressional District.

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan: Rand Paul declared winner in KY.

UPDATE II: From Saul Anuzis via Facebook: PA U.S. Senate Democrat Primary with 10.7% reporting: former RINO Specter 54.9% vs Sestak 45.1%

UPDATE III: Lowry on the Paul victory.

UPDATE IV: Critz cheating in PA-12?

UPDATE V: PA-12 not looking good so far for GOP. The Other McCain has the running details.

UPDATE VI: Looks like Burns will come up short in PA-12 – still, closer than GOP got in 2008; hard to overcome that kind of Democrat voter registration advantage especially when GOP State primary is a snoozer compared to red-hot Dem primary…

UPDATE VII: Specter defeated.

UPDATE VIII: 16,000 blank ballots for the PA-12 special? Theory: GOP Burns GOP opponent for the November nomination didn’t cast ballots in PA-12 special (makes sense) and thus Burns lost.

UPDATE IX: About 50,000 more GOPers cast ballots in the PA Senate primary than in 2006…both races with foregone conclusions and yet 50,000 more Republicans showed up. That is what will tell the tale in 2010.

UPDATE X: And let us not forget that we’re going to get the tonic of victory on May 22nd.

UPDATE XI: Lincoln forced in to June 8th run-off primary. Bad news for Donks – they’ll spend buckets of money only to come up with a sure-loser for November.

Obama and The Democrats Quadruple Deficit In A Year

Holy moly.

The United States posted an $82.69 billion deficit in April, nearly four times the $20.91 billion shortfall registered in April 2009 and the largest on record for that month, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday.

It was more than twice the $40-billion deficit that Wall Street economists surveyed by Reuters had forecast and was striking since April marks the filing deadline for individual income taxes that are the main source of government revenue.

Department officials said that in prior years, there was a surplus during April in 43 out of the past 56 years.

The government has now posted 19 consecutive monthly budget deficits, the longest string of shortfalls on record.

This is hardly a record to be proud of. You know, Republicans were booted out of power in 2006 in part because Democrats attacked their high spending. Here we are today, and Democrats have made the Republicans’ spending look frugal.

Sorry libs, you can’t blame Bush for this. This is the Democrats doing… Obama is the drunkest of drunken sailors.

Report: Kagan Did Not Urge Clinton to Back Late-Term Abortion Ban

The news:

To hear mainstream media outlets like the Associated Press and Washington Post tell the story, Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan once urged President Bill Clinton to back a ban on partial-birth or late-term abortions. The take from the stories is that Kagan’s rock solid pro-abortion views aren’t that strong.

Nothing could be further from the truth…

As it turned out, what Kagan had advised was for Clinton to back the Daschle bill on late-term abortions – an alternative which the pro-abortion groups were trying to slip through. It would have “banned” late term abortions except where the “health” of the mother was concerned. With “health” being undefined (and, indeed, undefinable) it wouldn’t have banned a single late-term abortion. Kagan was just trying to find a means for Clinton to please both sides while still advancing a radical, pro-abortion agenda.

Ultimately, this just indicates what was already suspected: that Kagan is a pro-abortion fanatic and that is the prime reason she was selected by Obama. Abortion is the be-all and end-all of existence on the left – it doesn’t matter if Kagan eventually comes down in favor of gun rights, free speech or a host of other issues…as long as she’s safe on abortion, that is all the left cares about. Given this, the one thing everyone involved would make sure of is that no matter what case comes before the Court, Kagan will vote in favor of abortion.

Which, of course, doesn’t change the complexion of the Court, at all. Justice Stevens has proven to be a pro-abortion fanatic, and he’s to be replaced by same. But don’t let anyone try to sell you on the notion that Kagan is other than what she is – an ultra-leftist, judicial activist.

Elena Kagan Open Thread

Discuss the Kagan appointment or anything related to the judiciary, Constitutional issues and such.

Kagan appointment: helping to bring social issues back to the center of politics. Thank you, Mr. Obama. Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad – and Obama seems to be more and more of a raving lunatic.

UPDATE: She’s also already ordering waffles for her confirmation hearings.

UPDATE II: She seems to have some worrisome, liberal-fascist views on free speech.
