Union Workers Win Battle, Lose War…But Can Still Triumph

The story:

The owners of Stella D’oro, the longtime Bronx Italian cookie and breadstick baker, said Wednesday they have sold the company – and its operations will be moving to Ohio by the end of the month.

Some 150 union and other plant workers will be out on the street.

“What are we going to do?” said a tearful Sara Rodriguez, a single mother of two who has worked as a supervisor at the Kingsbridge bakery for 11 years. “There’s nothing to do.”

Lance Inc., maker of Toastchee snacks, bought the company from Brynwood Partners, a Connecticut-based private equity firm, for an undisclosed sum.

Union workers went through a bitter strike that began last year after Brynwood, which bought Stella D’oro from Kraft Foods in 2006, demanded sharp cuts in wages and benefits.

Brynwood told the 136 members of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union they’d shut down otherwise.

The strike ended in July when a National Labor Relations Board judge ruled Brynwood had negotiated in bad faith with Local 50 and ordered it to pay lost wages and benefits. Brynwood then said it would have to sell the firm.

This shows how amazingly obtuse unions can be – a collapsing economy is not the time to engage in an all-or-nothing strike. Now there won’t be any wages or benefits – there will be no jobs at this firm, run by money managers who only care about quarterly profits. The new owners will set up shop, elsewhere, likely with less-expensive labor and make the same product at a higher profit. Its a win for consumers, its a win for rich people – it seems a big loss for these blue collar workers, shoved off an economic cliff by their idiot union.

What to do? The union is pledging to fight on, but I can’t see what they will actually do – are they going to try to get a court order prohibiting the shut down of the firm? I can’t see how they’ll have any success at this. On the other hand, there is much that can be done.

Now, the only thing the workers lost was an employer who wanted to pay them as little as possible – and they’ve also lost the equipment they used to make the products. But they are still the people who made the products – which, by the way, are apparently quite prized by New Yorkers as a friend of mine originally from that area asked my wife to pick up a couple packs of the cookies when she visited New York earlier this year. They can’t use that particular brand name – but they can make the very same cookies and there can be a name which will speak to what the product is…that it will be the “real thing” as opposed to the replacement stuff being made in Ohio.

What I’m saying is that these workers can start to do it on their own. Oh, they’ll need help – and if we were really trying to stimulate the economy, it is to people like them we’d give the money to…if they show willing to put their own sweat equity in to making it work. Its all about making, mining and growing things – and its all about the average folks taking charge of their own destiny. These people are not destitute – they don’t have money, but they have their skills, which are of a high order in their field. Its like taking away the stadium and equipment from the New England Patriots – they are still the Patriots and they can still play football. Get it?

These people have to stop being union workers and start being free workers – workers who take charge of their own and do it for themselves. No crawling after a union or corporate boss to pretty please give some crumbs…no: free men and women making their own wealth and then using it as they see fit. This is the grandest opportunity of their life, if they’ll only seize the moment.

Reid Attempts to Supress Anti-Reid Group

Typical of modern, liberal politics:

Sam Lieberman, Chairman of the Nevada Democrat Party, filed a complaint today with the FEC (which stands for Federal Election Commission, and that is actually VERY relevant to this matter as you’ll find out in the days to come) in an effort to shut down the Dump Reid PAC.

Please go here to Jon Ralston’s blog and read the complaint in its entirety. And pay particular attention to “Attachment A.”

Unfortunately, lawyers are now involved, so I have to get clearance before I can respond officially. However, let me say just a few things.

1.) This complaint is bull-$#%&.

2.) Sam Lieberman isn’t allowed to break wind without first getting permission from Harry Reid. So make no mistake, this is the Majority Leader of the United States Senate trying to shut down political speech by American citizens.

3.) Reid might win. He might actually have the law on his side on one trivial aspect of the complaint, and all we have on our side is the Constitution. Unfortunately, in this day and age that’s not enough. Just ask Susette Kelo.

Stay tuned. And keep a copy of the Reid/Lieberman complaint handy. Unless I’m forced to “lawyer up” because we don’t have the money to fight Dingy Harry in court over this, my response is gonna be a DOOZY!

Signed,

Citizen Muth

We can see Reid’s plan – silence voices speaking the truth about his actions, and work the system to try and get the most milquetoast GOPer possible to run against next year. Muth has pledged to fight hard against this, and I wish him well.

Is the Liberal's Kept "Conservative" Getting Special Treatment?

Andrew Sullivan was busted for pot, and his case is getting some odd treatment:

As one journalist commented, and I paraphrase him, Sullivan has backed the Obama stimulus, and universal health care, becoming what this man calls “a shameless publicist for the administration.” Another journalist spoke to a friend who works in the office of the U.S. Attorney, and got this response from one of the attorneys:

The judge is spot on. In fact, these sorts of misdemeanors are typically handled by 3rd yr. law students, detailees from main Justice, or the new guy on the totem pole, with no review by meaningful scrutiny by senior management. This sort of treatment is nothing short of extraordinary. All criminal charges go through screening by management, but misdemeanors don’t get attention, except to see if there’s a potential felony. This is paradigmatic of special pleading–and successful.

Finally, one journalist quipped: “As for the potential sentence: ‘The maximum penalty upon conviction of the offense is a fine of $5,000, six months imprisonment, a $25 processing fee and a $10 special assessment.’ The $25 processing fee strikes me as excessive.” I would add the $10 special assessment.

Lesson learned: if you’ll shill for the left, especially if you’re still considered by State-run media to be conservative, then you’ll find all sorts of doors opened for you. Welcome to Chicago politics, America.

How Much More ACORN Criminality Before You Liberals Admit It?

Geesh:

One day after two ACORN officials in Baltimore were fired for offering to help a man and woman posing as a pimp and prostitute to engage in child prostitution and a series of tax crimes, another secretly shot videotape has surfaced that shows the same couple getting similar advice from ACORN officers in Washington.

The newly released videotape, shot on July 25, shows ACORN staffers explaining to the pair how they can hide the woman’s professed work — prostitution — and get a loan that will help them establish a brothel.

James O’Keefe, a 25-year-old independent filmmaker, posed as the pimp while visiting the ACORN office, accompanied by 20-year-old Hannah Giles, who posed as the prostitute. On a videotape provided to FOXNews.com, they are seen receiving guidance to establish the woman as the sole proprietor of a bogus company to mask the nature of her business.

“She’s not going to put on (the loan application) that she’s doing prostitution … she doesn’t have to,” the ACORN staffer says. “You don’t have to sit back and tell people what you do.”

And all this ACORN criminality is just what people are catching. What would we find if we appointed a special prosecutor to look in to this, rather than absurd allegations of torture by the CIA? Of course, Obama’s Administration will never agree to such an investigation – too many people high up in Obama circles will probably be caught in the net.

All we can do right now is keep the pressure on and hope that we do win a House majority next year – and then we can start airing the full truth of leftwing crime in the United States.

UPDATE: Census Bureau terminates relationship with ACORN. This is good news, but I do wonder how many ACORN crooks the Administration will still force in to the census count? Obama and his Democrats are desperate to cook the books for redistricting – un-cooked books, you see, would lead to losses in Democrat-heavy areas. Can’t have that, you know? I mean, my goodness – a fair count and we might get more Republicans in Congress!

UPDATE II: ACORN’s take? Its all racism:

We believe our country is beyond this type of attack and call on all Americans to demand that FOX stop its racist coverage.

ACORN can take this charge and shove it where the sun don’t shine – and I, for one, pledge myself to unremitting war against ACORN and its criminal enterprises.

CNN and the False Report

Causing a bit of a stir:

Coast Guard Blames Media For Potomac Mishap

‘Routine Exercise’ Sparks Questions As Reports Surface That Shots Were Fired At Boat

Gibbs Criticizes Outlets That Reported Erroneous News

Ok, so CNN appears to have messed up – pretty much par for the course for CNN and, anyways, its not like Obama’s Administration has been keen on seeing to it that CNN reports are accurate. The larger question I have: why on Earth would you schedule a “routine” anti-terror exercise on 9/11? Either someone is lying, or someone is stupid. This, also, is par for the course – for the Obama Administration.

Yep, the nation is in the very best of hands…

Texas Rangers to the Border

Doing the job the federal government refuses:

Special teams of Texas Rangers will be deployed to the Texas-Mexico border to deal with increasing violence because the federal government has failed to address growing problems there, Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday.

“It is an expansive effort with the Rangers playing a more high-profile role than they’ve ever played before,” Perry said of the Department of Public Safety’s elite investigative unit.

The forces, dubbed “Ranger recon” teams, are the latest effort “to fill the gap that’s been left by the federal government’s ongoing failure to adequately secure our international border with Mexico,” he said.

What the pro-immigration activists, sundry liberals, “cheap labor” libertarians and race-baiters don’t get is that securing the border is in the interest of justice in its most basic form. By having an unsecure border, we are just giving free reign to criminals of all types who are causing murder and mayhem – including, and most especially, on those people just trying to cross the border to find work. It is pro-immigrant to be in favor of securing the border; pro-immigrant, pro-law, pro-justice…pro-basic human decency.

But we don’t – and we must not forget that while Bush did better than everyone else, he still failed to fully secure our southern border. Now that Obama is in office, the signal is out that we will be more and more lax in our border enforcement – this is just making a bad situation in to a disaster. And, so, Texas is doing the right thing – the people of Texas have a right to justice being secured on their border with Mexico. If the US government won’t do its duty, then the Texas government must do it, or be complicit in immoral failure.

“Whatever it takes” should be our motto on border security – and keep in mind that I am a pro-immigrant person who wises to find a path to citizenship for the illegals in country. But before we do anything, we must make our border just and secure. If this requires a 100 foot high, barbed-wire-topped concrete wall along the whole length of the border, then that is what we’re going to have to do – for our benefit and the benefit of those innocent foreigners who just want to find work. President Obama should pay heed to Texas’ action and fall in line with this simple enforcement of essential justice.

Phrase of the Day

In memory of all those who have died in the fight for liberty:

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

– Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

NJ-GOV: Christie Still Leads Corzine

By a healthy 8 points less than two months before election day:

Republican challenger Chris Christie continues to lead incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in the race for New Jersey governor.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey of voters in the Garden State finds Christie, a former federal prosecutor, on top 46% to 38%. Independent candidate Chris Daggett gets six percent (6%) of the vote, and 10% are undecided.

The problem with the GOP in New Jersey – as noted later in the poll results – is that the GOP has usually failed to close the deal – some how or another, the GOPer just falls flat in the last month. But, also, usually the GOP isn’t 8 points ahead at this place in the campaign.

Its all up to Christie and the New Jersey GOP – we’ve got the wind at our backs and a Democrat brand name which is getting more toxic by the day. All that needs to be done is to fight like heck and don’t let up for a minute.

Governor Sanford, You Should Still Resign

He comes out fighting:

Despite mounting calls for his resignation, Republican South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford continues his fight to stay in office.

Sanford has scheduled a 3:30 PM news conference today at the statehouse in Columbia.

The news conference comes one day after Sanford received a letter, signed by 61 of the 72 Republicans controlling the South Carolina House of Representatives, asking for his resignation. On Tuesday, Republican House Speaker Bobby Harrell sent the governor a similar letter…

It is reported that Sanford wants us to hear “the rest of the story” – errrmmm, yeah. Governor, “the rest of the story” is that you cheated on your wife. Once upon a time you took your soul in your hands and swore a holy oath to God and your wife that you would forsake all others. Some time later, you threw aside your sworn word and had an affair. This doesn’t preclude you from serving your fellow man – this doesn’t preclude you from gaining God’s forgiveness and entering in to the joy of the life of the world to come…but it does mean you need to atone for your oath-breaking, and you can’t do that while in office.

Go, and let us hear no more of you for some years. Do something worthwhile which none of us know about – and then get back to us.
