Our Problem is Our Moral Failure

I’ve been pondering writing a history of the 20th century and calling it, “The 20th Century: A Christian Failure” or, perhaps, “A Failure of Christians”. We really flopped in the 20th century, we who claim to call Jesus Our Lord – we allowed things to slide from bad to worse and each time a moral decision was required we retreated behind a fog of disingenuous rhetoric about “rights” and “separation of Church and State”. This is not to say that our Jewish and Moslem brothers and sisters didn’t contribute to the whole problem, but as the West in general – and the United States in particular – have been the project of those who, in their large majority, claim (or, at least, claimed at one time) to be Christian, the lion’s share of the blame must be laid at our door.

Discussing the financial meltdown, Deacon Keith Fournier points out that the financial failure is, at bottom, just a symptom of our moral failure – our unwillingness to speak the truth and adhere to truth:

When a society fails to recognize that persons are more important than things, when it loses sight of the primacy of the inviolable dignity of every single human person at every age, every stage and of every size, it soon devolves into a form of practical materialism, worshipping a new golden calf. It uses the language of human rights but has lost its true moral content. When there is no recognition of a preeminent right to life, there will soon be an erosion of the entire structure of human rights. Human rights do not exist in a vacuum; they are goods of the human person. This is why I absolutely insist that to be “Pro-Life” is NOT to be a political Partisan or a “single issue” voter. Rather, it is to be truly human and to recognize that there is a hierarchy of rights. Without acknowledging the preeminent right to life, all derivative rights and the entire infrastructure of human rights is placed in jeopardy. The further legitimate questions and positions of political parties become moot. Without the freedom to be born, all of the talk about compassion for the poor and the promotion of freedom throughout the entirety of life, and how we attain it, is hollow and empty. Failing to recognize our first neighbors in the womb as having a right to be born and then to live a full life in our community is a foundational failure of our obligation in solidarity to one another and the entire ethic of being “our brothers (and sisters) keeper”. There can be no enduring lasting solidarity in a culture that kills its own children and then calls it a “right”. This is a moral crisis.

Mother Teresa, whom the Catholic Church now rightly calls “Blessed Teresa”, put it so clearly: “America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts — a child — as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.” (emphasis in original)

Some people contest my assertion that abortion – the battle over Life – is the central issue of our times, but the more time goes on and the deeper I think on this issue, the more clear it is that I’m correct in my assertion. While there are many elements and cross-currents at work in our world today, the fact that we removed the most defenseless from the protection of our laws has been corroding our culture until, now, we hardly even bat an eye at moral depravity which, once upon a time, would have outraged the whole of society. The fabric of lies which has been used to support legal abortion has found itself apt in supporting every other form of moral collapse – it really does go, “if its ok to abort a child, then its ok to – insert immoral act here“.

At the heart of our financial crisis stands one Barney Frank – no, he’s not the primary culprit, as there is no such person in existence; it was a group effort. But, still, Frank is at the center of the meltdown – and he’s a man who offered his shield to the malefactors of great wealth who plundered Fannie and Freddie; while, at times, his lover was involved with the firms…and, once upon a time, Frank wrote letters on behalf of another lover who needed character witnesses in regards to his conviction for having sex with a minor. In other words, Frank is the sort of person who, once upon a time, would not have survived in politics…but now we shrink away, fearful that any critique of Frank – or the underlying immorality of Frank which so easily led him down the path to cover for financial skullduggers – will get us called “homophobic” and other hateful names…and so, Frank goes on, and likely will continue to go on until he voluntarily retires from the scene. Frank is impervious to us – because he has slipped out of basic morality, and we have become afraid to point out the truth of the matter.

Unless and until we recover our morality, all our efforts to cure our society will ultimate fail. Only men and women who boldly state what is right and what is wrong and who take the fight to the corrupt special interests. We can’t have, as it were, an open and honest banking system run by people who think that killing children is ok, or that pornography is harmless, or that massive sex and violence in popular culture won’t lead people astray. As we view it right here, three weeks before the election, the reason Obama is ahead is because we are – or, at least, have been – thus far unwilling to really call him on his lies and his horrific personal and political associates….he might slip into the White House on a series of lies which the American majority – long fallen from a rigid adherence to morality – fall for because they sound good. Lies usually do – its why we tell so many of them. Truth is like rough sandpaper to the soft, velvety texture of Lies.

We have a choice in November – to find comfort in plausible lies, or to march open eyed into the difficult country of Truth. What will that choice be, I wonder?

McCain's Leadership

We can pick Obama, who votes “present” when he’s not voting wrong – or we can pick McCain, who always puts country first:

Sen. John McCain’s 2006 demand for regulatory action on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could have prevented current financial crisis, as HUMAN EVENTS learned from the letter shown in full text below.

McCain’s letter — signed by nineteen other senators — said that it was “…vitally important that Congress take the necessary steps to ensure that [Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac]…operate in a safe and sound manner.[and]..More importantly, Congress must ensure that the American taxpayer is protected in the event that either…should fail.”

Sen. Obama did not sign the letter, nor did any other Democrat.

This link has a copy of the actual letter.

In this, we see that there is no contest between McCain and Obama – McCain can recognize a problem and take steps to correct it before it becomes a crisis. Obama is oblivious and when the crisis hits he hides behind vague words when he’s not repeating mindless leftwing talking points.

Right now, Obama is riding high in the polls and there’s even a news story saying the Democrats are so confident of victory that they are planning a lame duck session of Congress to start passing Democratic legislation even before Obama takes the oath – which story is clearly a DNC plant. Why? Because it would make no sense to call Congress together before Obama takes the oath – until January 3rd there are at least 49 Republican Senators and until January 20th a Republican President. But, if your desire is to get the MSM to make it seem more and more like the race is over, then its just the sort of story you want to put out there. Still, there’s no denying that it looks pretty grim for the GOP – and yet I still have a light heart and an unquenchable optimism.

The facts – as opposed to the polls and the spin – show different. They still show Obama ahead, but they don’t show a coming coronation – and with a candidate who is clearly superior and who has only just this past week started to fight back heavily against an Obama ad/MSM blitz coupled with a financial meltdown which was bound to drag down anything with “GOP” attached to it, I’m feeling very confident in our ability to turn things around. A hard fight – an uphill fight; but a fight well worth doing and a fight which can actually rather easily be won, if we remain stout hearted. Always keep in mind fellow Republicans and conservatives – we are right, they are wrong; and right will triumph in the end.

Obama Will Provide the Talking Points!

We here at Blogs for Victory have long figured that a lot of our lefty comments are churned out in some Obama war room – and now I get an e mail from Team Obama which confirms it:

Right now, supporters like you who live in crucial battleground states are in a special position to influence this election by talking to undecided voters in your community. You can help by making phone calls or knocking on doors to set the record straight and win your state.

Get your list of potential supporters to contact. We’ll give you talking points you can use…

…No experience is required — you can do it all from home.

For crying out loud – does it get any more pathetic than this? “Help us by repeating what we tell you to say”.

Have liberals always been this much a bunch of mind-numbed robots?

Do You Want Obama to Win?

Ok, now that you’ve recovered from the stomach cramps caused by the mere thought of that, its time to get out there and fight the good fight:

he McCain-Palin campaign is now recruiting volunteers for the final weeks of the campaign and your help is needed.

Volunteers on the ground are crucial to our efforts to get-out-the-vote in the all-important battleground states. Senator Obama’s campaign has spent millions hiring paid staff to work in their offices making phone calls and knocking on doors across these states. We need your help to combat their efforts and elect the McCain-Palin ticket on Election Day.

Whatever your schedule is, there are volunteer opportunities for those of you who can dedicate a few weeks, a few days and even a few hours. As a volunteer for our campaign, you will be helping our get-out-the-vote strategy by going door-to-door and making phone calls to voters. Volunteer training will be provided, so no prior experience is needed.

Please follow this link to sign up as a volunteer for McCain-Palin 2008.

I cannot stress how crucial it is for you to volunteer your time for John McCain and Sarah Palin. All of our efforts to elect them as our next President and Vice President are coming down to the final weeks of this campaign. With your help, we will elect the ticket who is ready to lead in Washington and will always put the needs of our country before their own. Please sign up to volunteer today. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Bill Bloomfield

Director of Volunteers

P.S. If you have friends, neighbors, family or co-workers interested in volunteering, please forward this email on and encourage them to sign up as a volunteer. Thank you!

Victory doesn’t just happen and McCain and Palin can’t do this on their own. We will either win by our efforts, or fail for lack of effort.

The choice is yours.

Richard Petty Endorses McCain

Not exactly a surprise, but yet another indicator that the backbone of America is solidly behind John McCain:

ARLINGTON, VA — McCain-Palin 2008 today announced that Richard Petty, widely known as the greatest driver in NASCAR history, is endorsing John McCain for president. Petty is announcing his endorsement at today’s Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte , N.C.

“What we need right now in these uncertain times is a steady hand on the wheel — a leader we can trust to put country first, ahead of politics,” Petty said. “John McCain has always done that, and if you need proof, think about the sacrifices he made for America . I don’t think there is any question that John McCain is a proud American and he has done more to better America than anyone.

“John McCain has a plan to get our economy back on track not only for the folks here in North Carolina but also nationwide. He understands that higher taxes will only make things worse and he’ll support small businesses and create jobs. He will get us on the road to energy independence and give our troops what they need to succeed in Iraq and Afghanistan . I’m proud to support John McCain for president.”

Petty won 200 races during his career, a NASCAR record, and won a record seven Winston Cup championships. He won the Daytona 500 seven times, also a record, and won 27 races in 1967 alone.

The people who do the work of the United States are for McCain/Palin – in opposition to those cynical, despairing people who hold America in contempt. It really is time for all good men to come to the aid of their country and work for McCain’s victory.

Sarah Palin Speaks for Life

Obama couldn’t even drag himself to vote to protect babies born alive after botched abortions – contrast his cynical cowardice with Sarah Palin’s bold statement for life:

In this same spirit, as defenders of the culture of life, John McCain and I believe in the goodness and potential of every innocent life. I believe the truest measure of any society is how it treats those who are least able to defend and speak for themselves. And who is more vulnerable, or more innocent, than a child?

When I learned that my son Trig would have special needs, I had to prepare my heart for the challenges to come. At first I was scared, and Todd and I had to ask for strength and understanding. But I can tell you a few things I’ve learned already.

Yes, every innocent life matters. Everyone belongs in the circle of protection. Every child has something to contribute to the world, if we give them that chance. There are the world’s standards of perfection … and then there are God’s, and these are the final measure. Every child is beautiful before God, and dear to Him for their own sake.

As for our beautiful baby boy, for Todd and me, he is only more precious because he is vulnerable. In some ways, I think we stand to learn more from him than he does from us. When we hold Trig and care for him, we don’t feel scared anymore. We feel blessed.

It’s hard to think of many issues that could possibly be more important than who is protected in law and who isn’t – who is granted life and who is denied it. So when our opponent, Senator Obama, speaks about questions of life, I listen very carefully.

I listened when he defended his unconditional support for unlimited abortions. He said that a woman shouldn’t have to be – quote – “punished with a baby.” He said that right here in Johnstown –“punished with a baby” – and it’s about time we called him on it. The more I hear from Senator Obama, the more I understand why he is so vague and evasive on the subject. Americans need to see his record for what it is. It’s not negative or mean-spirited to talk to about his record. Whatever party you belong to, there are facts you need to know.

Senator Obama has voted against bills to end partial-birth abortion. In the Illinois Senate, a bipartisan majority passed legislation against that practice. Senator Obama opposed that bill. He voted against it in committee, and voted “present” on the Senate floor. In that legislature, “present” is how you vote when you’re against something, but don’t want to be held to account.

As I’ve said before, even if we lose on November 4th, we win. We’ve got Sarah Palin and coming up fast behind her is Bobby Jindal…and, additionally, even a defeated John McCain will be in the Senate to carry on the fight for life. You people on the left don’t realize your peril or how badly you’ve screwed up…and all you ever had to do to get it right was to come to the common sense and utterly human understanding that life is good, and worthy of our best protections. But, of course, I don’t think we’re going to lose – is a coward like Obama going to defeat a hero like John McCain? Is the culture of death really going to triumph over the Culture of Life? I don’t think so; I pray for McCain, for Palin and for Life – and, indeed, I pray for Barack Obama, that he will soon see how badly wrong he’s been and how easily he can repair the damage…life trumps all, even – believe it or not – the level of taxation and whether or not Iraq was a good idea.

Life and hope will always win – even if they suffer a temporary setback.

Jonah Goldberg Experiences the Tolerant Left

Posted ’cause all of us are feeling this sort of sentiment from the left these days:

Some nice notes about last night’s Larry King Live. But, as ever, the hate mail is so much more dramatic (bowdlerizing asterisks mine):

Subject: u r a f****n JEW hick

Saw you on Larry King calling the director of ACORN a liar! you f****n hick!!, who the HELL are you? don’t be mad because you and the other “NEOCONS” are gonna LOSE this election, stick a sock in it! u bastard!! you might as well face it

A CHANGE IS COMING!! and his name is BARACK OBAMA!!

U BETTER NOT GET IT TWISTED!

I kind of like being called a “Jew hick.” I’d love to hear the horah played on banjos, wahsboards and spoons!

I’ve noted that as the election nears and the left asserts that it is more and more confident of victory, we get nastier and nastier comments from the left – you’d figure that the prospect of overwhelming victory would mellow them out and make them more tolerant of us…but, nothing doing; the hatred grows apace. Do keep in mind, lefties, that if you do win its not like you’re going to be able to set up a Dictatorship of the Proletariat…we do retain powers in this land and we’re not just going to roll over and play dead…so, if you want a honeymoon period, you’d better start behaving. Of course, more important in all this is the necessity of adhering to my Political Rule #1: Look at what people do, not what they say.

The hatred being spewed from the left and Obama’s last-minute attempts to stuff the ballot box and deploy legions of attorneys to battle ground States indicates that not all is well in lefty land – that, just perhaps, there is a growing realization three weeks out from Obama’s coronation that he’s yet to seal the deal and, indeed, there is still plenty of time and chances for McCain to take this thing away from The One. America has been and remains a center-right political entity and even if there is a choice for Obama it will be a reflection of a distaste for the GOP rather than a rejection of individual liberty and a hankering for Euro-trash socialism. Obama and his minions will, of course, view an Obama victory as carte blanche to advance a hard left agenda and that will be their undoing – but the “nuts and bolts” political operatives of the Democratic party know better, and are pulling out all the stops to try and drag Obama’s leftist carcass over the finish line.

I do believe that it will fail, in the end – that on January 20th, much to the dismay of the left, John McCain will be sworn in as President of the United States. Could I be wrong? Of course. Am I predicting it as a certainty? Of course not – only a fool would make such a bald-faced prediction at this point…but I do believe that when push comes to shove, the basic good will and common sense of the American majority will come out on top, and John McCain will win.

RezkOctober

From Politico:

“Your Honor, the prosecutors have been overzealous in pursuing a crime that never happened,” wrote disgraced Chicago real estate magnate Antoin “Tony” Rezko to his judge a few months ago. “They are pressuring me to tell them the wrong things that I supposedly know about Gov. Blagojevich and Sen. Barack Obama.”

What’s interesting about this claim is that, according to press accounts, Rezko is now indeed talking to prosecutors.

What Rezko has to say is far more likely to impact Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich, whose administration is being investigated.

Not one witness at Rezko’s trial said Obama did anything improper.

And yet … what are prosecutors pressuring Rezko about? And now that Rezko’s reportedly making like a canary, what song is he singing?

UPDATE: An Obama supporter helpfully points out that Rezko’s lawyer Joseph Duffy has walked his client’s letter back, saying that prosecutors never intimated it is investigating anything about Obama.

“I’m not aware of any impropriety related to Rezko and Obama,” Duffy said, per the Chicago Tribune. “At no point has the government ever asked me a single question about Obama, or any wrongdoing involving Rezko and Obama.”

That Obama supporter is whistling past the graveyard – Obama is hip deep in the massive and nauseating corruption which is all there is to Chicago Democratic politics…whether or not the prosecutors will decide to pursue the matter if it relates to Obama remains to be seen (people are fearful of taking on the Democratic party as it is not only corrupt, but quite nasty in the way it takes endless revenge upon anyone who crosses it), but Obama is not clean, not by a long shot. It is, quite simply, impossible for anyone to rise in Chicago Democratic party without willingly engaging in corruption – there is not and cannot be an honest man in Chicago politics because the whole system is built and sustained on political corruption. This is, by the way, nothing peculiar to Democratic party politics per se – any one-party political entity will naturally gravitate towards corruption due to humanity’s fallen nature (something liberalism fails to understand). The only way such things can be changed is via a massive, revolutionary change of heart amongst the electorate, or outsiders calling the corrupt to account and one or more of the corrupt actors detailing the who, where, when, why and how of it all.

Obama may win on November 4th – and if he does, all you liberals will have done is help elevate a deeply flawed leftist to office who, like Clinton, will be mired in corruption scandals from day one to day last of his Administration. Meanwhile, he’ll also push policies which will be bad for America, and bad for the world. Is beating the GOP worth this, liberals?

THINK.
