Writing a Book Open Thread

Still working on Secrets – you all have got your copy of Mirrors, right? – and I’m enjoying it immensely. Don’t really know much about the whole fiction author thing but I do wonder if authors are supposed to fall in love with their characters? Bryce and Fred are just great guys while Celeste and Rossalyn are proving to be very tough and resourceful, at any rate. I’m just under 60,000 words on the sequel and it is coming to its climax; probably another 30-40,000 words to go. I’ve introduced several new good guys and a couple new bad guys, as well (one of which is a woman, to sort of balance it out – all my ladies have proven to be good eggs, so far; so I thought I needed a bad lady). As happened to a much better work, the tale is growing in the telling and, at least for me, three or four books of this won’t be enough. I’ve also had to draw a map of Hadwin’s world – it was getting difficult to orientate what direction everyone was going without it. Now I understand why Tolkien also needed one.

Flynn case dismissed, right? Well, not quite – the judge in the case is proving to be an obvious ally of the Deep State and is now inviting Trump opponents to tell him why he should keep the case going, even though the prosecutor says there is no crime to charge Flynn with, or even anything to start an investigation over. Just amazing. One theory I’ve seen is that they want to force Trump to pardon Flynn – to keep some patina of “he’s guilty” on it all. Maybe – but it also might be sheer, hate-filled bloody mindedness at this point.

Acting DNI Grennell has declassified lots and lots of stuff and this is allowing us, for the first time, to really see the picture of the coup attempt. It is going to be very hard to not vote for Grennell in the GOP primary in 2024, should he decide to run. He’s showing that he’s got the most important Trumpist aspect: guts. And if he can be brave while also being less abrasive than Trump, he might become an unstoppable political force. We’ll see what the future brings.

RSM on the Arbery case. I’m mostly agnostic on the case because, well, if the MSM is pushing it hard (and they are) then someone is lying. There’s no way the MSM would push a true story. At the very least, there doesn’t seem to be an actual racial angle here, though the MSM and its minions are already saying that Arbery was killed because he was black. Maybe the shooters are guilty of murder or manslaughter – that is for a jury to decide and unless they plead out, this will go to a jury and the jury will hear the actual facts of the case: and those facts may end up strongly at variance with what the MSM has been saying.

    Did y’all see this:

LA County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said Tuesday stay-at-home orders will ‘with all certainty’ be extended for the next three months. Ferrer said the shocking timeline will only change if LA sees a ‘dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand’. While other parts of the state have recorded a decline in daily infections and deaths, LA continues to record a growth in both areas. The county continues to see a spike in cases and deaths, with another 566 people testing positive and 39 dying from the virus Monday. As of Tuesday, 1,570 have died from the virus in LA – making up more than half of California’s COVID-19 deaths. While other parts of the state have recorded a decline in daily infections and deaths, LA continues to record a growth in both areas. Ferrer said the aim is to ease restrictions over the coming months but that this will only happen if the rates of infections and deaths decline.

I can’t wait to watch this “authoritarian decree” unfold. I willing to wager that the deaths from suicide and drug abuse will far outnumber the Covid deaths.

This fact though has to have Democrats a little worried:

Republicans are running ahead in two special elections for congressional seats that are viewed as bellwethers for November.

In Wisconsin, Republican Tom Tiffany easily won Tuesday’s special election, while in California preliminary results showed the GOP leading in a race to recapture a seat vacated by a Democrat.

In California, Mike Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot endorsed by President Donald Trump, was ahead of Democratic California state legislator Christy Smith by 55.9 percent to 44.1 percent in the state’s 25th congressional district north of Los Angeles, preliminary results from the California Secretary of State’s office said.

And the media will not give up on the Russia collusion hoax. But they are in so deep now, it is their only option. Here’s the latest from the Atlantic which was just covered on MSNBC:

Russia’s interference in the last presidential election is among the most closely studied phenomena in recent American history, having been examined by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his prosecutors, by investigators working for congressional committees, by teams within Facebook and Twitter, by seemingly every think tank with access to a printing press. It’s possible, however, to mistake a plot point—the manipulation of the 2016 election—for the full sweep of the narrative.

Events in the United States have unfolded more favorably than any operative in Moscow could have ever dreamed: Not only did Russia’s preferred candidate win, but he has spent his first term fulfilling the potential it saw in him, discrediting American institutions, rending the seams of American culture, and isolating a nation that had styled itself as indispensable to the free world. But instead of complacently enjoying its triumph, Russia almost immediately set about replicating it. Boosting the Trump campaign was a tactic; #DemocracyRIP remains the larger objective.

The Russians have learned much about American weaknesses, and how to exploit them. Having probed state voting systems far more extensively than is generally understood by the public, they are now surely more capable of mayhem on Election Day—and possibly without leaving a detectable trace of their handiwork. Having hacked into the inboxes of political operatives in the U.S. and abroad, they’ve pioneered new techniques for infiltrating campaigns and disseminating their stolen goods. Even as to disinformation, the best-known and perhaps most overrated of their tactics, they have innovated, finding new ways to manipulate Americans and to poison the nation’s politics. Russia’s interference in 2016 might be remembered as the experimental prelude that foreshadowed the attack of 2020.

One noticeable glaring error, among many, is the contention that “Robert Mueller” carefully examined Russia interference. Um, no he didn’t. Mueller only looked into Trump’s actions and did his best to construe a crime. Mueller did nothing to examine the extent of Russia’s actions or to propose any measures to curtail them. In fact, I really wonder what exactly Mueller did do. He knew from the beginning that there was zero corroborating evidence yet he he drug it our for another 2 years.

This is yet another demonstration that American conservatives and this new toxic mixture of WOKE progressives/liberals, and old white elitist Democrats have nothing in common. They are firmly planted in their alternative universe of Trump obsession and identity politics.

Joseph Goebbels would be proud of the job the American media is doing.

No contrition or introspection whatsoever. I want to see people in handcuffs.

I don’t listen to Glenn Beck much any more, and he ended his relationship with Dish Network, so we don’t get to watch anything on Blaze TV effective several months ago. That said, I happened to have the radio on this morning, and Beck has Lara Logan on for the entire second hour discussing the Russia collusion hoax, framing of Flynn and the revelations made public with the declassification of the testimony transcripts from the House Intelligence Committee closed door hearings. (God bless Rick Grenell) Beck made the comment that a recent poll of Blaze subscribers revealed that 90% don’t believe ANYONE involved in the attempted coup to prevent Trump from winning in 2016 and/or removing him from office will be held accountable. He went on to say that if that is the eventual reality, the survival of our Republic is in jeopardy. I could not agree more.

First of all, (and I fully admit I could be wrong on this) I don’t see the current crop of Republicans engaging in the kind of illegal behavior that the Democrats have for the last 3 years simply because the Dems got away with it, and it’s become the new political norm. I regularly communicate with a lot of Conservatives, and I don’t hear a single one of them suggesting that, if the Dems are not held accountable we’ll engage in full out tit for tat. So, that would leave one political party free to continue to engage in the kinds of flagrant lying, distorting and manipulating that we’ve seen since Trump came down the escalator in 2015. That very simply CAN’T become the new norm, and if our justice system won’t stop it, I’m betting the people will.

So as of today there are 1.4 million cases of the virus here in America and the next closest country has less than 300,000. Hmmmm, kind of seems like America was the target.

    • Retired Spook May 13, 2020 / 3:41 pm

I suspect it has more to do with the amount of testing we’re doing compared to other countries. What’s even MORE suspicious is that, according to the Worldometers site China has been between 82,000 and 83,000 since the end of March.

this article was referenced in my Congressman’s daily newsletter.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISHTV) – A new COVID-19 complication is leaving doctors scratching their heads: The condition is called “silent hypoxia.”

Hypoxia happens when the body doesn’t get the oxygen supply it needs to function. The tissues, muscles and internal organs need oxygen to sustain life. Typically, when a person experiences hypoxia, there are noticeable signs. He or she is out of breath, feels light-headed and — in severe cases — becomes unconscious. With “silent hypoxia,” there are no signs. Essentially, a COVID-19 patient may be deprived of oxygen and not even know it.

Doctors are seeing patients come in with mild symptoms like chest pain or a bit of fatigue. But other than that, they seem to be functioning just fine. However, when the patients’ oxygen levels are tested, they are dangerously low. A person should have an oxygen level between 95 and 100%. Anything under 90% is a sign something’s off. These COVID-19 patients are presenting levels as low as 50%.

What’s most concerning is, by the time these people suspect something is wrong and seek treatment, the damage to the lungs — and possibly other organs — is already done.

The first thing that came to my mind was, what percentage of the people exhibiting silent hypoxia had been wearing masks for lengthy periods of time. I can imagine breathing in your own CO2 for hours on end would seriously impact your oxygen level.

    • jdge1 May 14, 2020 / 12:21 am

Good point about the CO2 and masks. I’ve seen and read numerous cases of health issues directly related to this, though I highly doubt politicians intent on lockdown even care.

    • Amazona May 14, 2020 / 12:25 pm

I get it with the mask observations. A very fit and athletic 36-year-old friend felt light-headed after wearing a mask for a couple of hours at Home Depot. (The “couple of hours” thing goes back to what several of us are thinking, which is that some companies are using the virus to cut back on payroll expenses, figuring they can get away with worse customer service these days.) Yesterday I had one on for about an hour but quickly had to lift the bottom part up to be able to breathe more easily. These are the blue fiber masks. I finally bought a couple of bandannas to use, as the mask is primarily symbolic, anyway.

I happened to be at the doctor’s office yesterday and my blood oxygen level was good, but I went ahead and ordered a couple of pulse ox sensors on Amazon, just to be able to keep track—maybe an ostentatious check while in line at the grocery store followed by “See, I TOLD you these masks are dangerous!”

Somewhere in my garage I probably still have the WW 1 gas mask in my husband’s memorabilia collection. I have been so tempted to dig it out and wear it to the store. That, and big safety goggles, and maybe some horse OB gloves—they to go the shoulder, don’t ask.

Cross your fingers that this is for real.

A California biopharmaceutical company claims to have discovered a coronavirus antibody breakthrough that has shown 100% inhibition of COVID-19 in laboratory tests. Executives at Sorrento Therapeutics announced the possible coronavirus antibody treatment on Friday, and say it could be more effective than a vaccine in quickly combating COVID-19.

    • Amazona May 16, 2020 / 9:30 am

What will be interesting will be the Dem rush to discredit this, or if it proves to be effective to demand “reasonable” (such as two years) clinical testing before it can be used.

Where has Kayleigh McEnany been all of our lives? She is incredible and the best thing that has happened to the Trump admin in a while. I thought Sarah was good, but Kayleigh is on another level and she should be front and center from now thru November. And there is a reason why you don’t see any of the Kayleigh’s press briefings being mentioned on MSNBC or CNN because she absolutely shreds the propagandists from those two outlets. It’s a thing of beauty to watch.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany schooled a reporter about Obamagate on Friday. The smug reporter asked the press secretary to name the specific elements of the crime that members of the Obama administration may have committed. After first acknowledging the lack of journalistic curiosity on the subject by the mainstream media, McEnany went through a list of possible crimes.

More and more doctors are coming forward to say that masks are essentially worthless in preventing the spread of COVID-19 or protecting the wearer from contracting it. And confirming what I speculated a day or two ago, the high end masks like the N95 also cause oxygen depletion if worn for several hours at a time.

    • jdge1 May 16, 2020 / 12:02 pm

Between releasing almost 1,000 inmates and forcing everyone to wear masks, what could possibly go wrong?

”According to KCBS, Santa Ana police confirmed Thursday that the city’s robberies have indeed increased by a whopping 50 percent during the lockdown.”

  8. Cluster May 16, 2020 / 1:07 pm

    What could go wrong?

The House of Representatives on Friday passed a historic piece of legislation, allowing members to vote by proxy and conduct hearings remotely for the next 45 days because of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. Under the new rules, which passed mostly along party lines, congressmen and women can give written instructions to another member in the chamber to vote on their behalf. One representative can serve as a proxy voter for up to 10 other members at any given time. Those who choose to work remotely can still participate in open hearings and cast committee votes. Closed hearings, however, will still be held in-person on Capitol Hill.

Every single representative that gave their vote to another member needs to be identified and disqualified from ever holding office again.

    • Amazona May 16, 2020 / 3:20 pm

Every single member of the House who agreed to let votes be cast by proxy should never be allowed to hold office again whether or not he or she actually participates in the process.

      There; fixed

And—“mostly” along party lines? Did Republicans vote for it? Dems against?

Joe Biden has spent his entire career stealing other people’s words and ideas and lying about and embellishing who he is and what he’s accomplished. His ability to be a convincing liar hasn’t improved over the years. If the majority of voters hate Trumps so much that they would entrust the leadership of the country to such a man, then God help us.

    • Amazona May 16, 2020 / 3:14 pm

Joe Biden is a perfect example of Identity Politics. When you ask someone why or how he could support Joe you don’t get “Because he is so smart” or any version of “Because he is the best man for the job”. What you get is “Because…….Trump!”

I love it when normal Americans take the shit that Democrats dish out and then shove it down their throat. The following from Atwater, CA

“A resolution of the city council of the city of Atwater affirming the city’s commitment to fundamental rights of life, liberty, and property, and declaring the city of Atwater a sanctuary city for all businesses,” the resolution read

    Sanctuary city for businesses. LMAO
