De Gaulle was brought back to power in France in 1958 because it was felt – almost certainly correctly – that the weak and faction-ridden government of the Fourth Republic was planning on scuttling French Algeria so they could concentrate on obtaining/retaining power/money in metropolitan France. The idea was that De Gaulle would have the prestige to form a government strong enough to complete the war in Algeria – which was functionally won but just needed a bit more push, though that bit of getting rid of the last of the Islamo-Communist fanatics was going to be nasty, bloody work. The people who wanted a powerful France crowned with victory worked a coup in Algeria as a preliminary to ushering De Gaulle back into power…and, it worked. The government of the Fourth Republic – mostly made up of Leftist cowards and sundry crooks – threw up the sponge and allowed De Gaulle to assume office and create the Fifth Republic.
And then De Gaulle proceeded, step by step, to scuttle French Algeria. Took him only two years to completely undo what French soldiers (and large numbers of Algerians) had fought and bled for over a four year period before De Gaulle came back into office. Essentially doing what France had by and large rejected doing in getting De Gaulle back into power. And in the process allowing the people who had wrecked France during the Fourth Republic to retain power and position within the French system. As a last insult, it was these people who would eventually force De Gaulle out and set France firmly on the path which led to Third World Islamo-Communist savages rioting in French cities.
Real will of the people stuff there, huh?
There is a real problem in the West of the people wanting certain things – and even at times massively voting in favor of certain things – and simply not getting them because the people in power simply refuse…and very often do the exact opposite of what the people want.
Enoch Powell gave his “Rivers of Blood” speech on April 20th, 1968 deploring mass Third World migration and it resulted in a surprise Tory win in the 1970 elections – the Tories and every other party in Britain remain committed to mass immigration of Third World barbarians.
Nixon never promised us the EPA nor the removal of our currency from the gold standard.
Can’t find a stump speech where Johnson said we’d go to full scale war in Vietnam shortly after the 1964 election.
Reagan didn’t run on the 1986 amnesty. Kinda came out of nowhere, as I recall.
Anyone remember “no new taxes”?
Did anything Bill Clinton ever say as a matter of policy ever actually happen?
W, to his credit, did run on Social Security reform in 2004 but the whole of the GOP leadership torpedoed the effort…even though they had won on the basis of W winning in 2004.
McCain famously ran his last campaign for Senate on repealing Obamacare and then became the decisive vote preventing repeal.
Don’t think Paul Ryan ran on a platform of going along with Democrat efforts to undermine Trump after the 2016 election.
Getting the picture? We just don’t get what we want. The will of the people is simply ignored when it can’t be manipulated into going along with the preconceived notions of the Elite.
Until Trump.
That is the secret of his success – not just promising things, but actually trying to do them. We really don’t want an open border. He closed it. We don’t want people stealing welfare money. He’s arresting thieves. We do want Iran removed as a problem. Trump is removing it. We don’t want to keep the Ukraine war going. Trump is trying to stop it. We do want cheap energy. Trump is doing everything he can on this score. On and on and on like that – he’s clearly trying to do what we elected him to do. And that is why he’s hated. Had he just blathered away at us telling us what we wanted to hear and then coming up with excuses for why he had to do the opposite, the Elite would have fallen in line behind him…that he’s doing what he said he’d do is what infuriates the Elite, and energizing the common people for Trump.
We’ll find out Tuesday just how well (or poorly!) this is working out. But what can’t be denied – no matter the particular results – is that Trump has given the people a taste of what its like to have a government responsive to the will of the people. There’s no going back from this – except by the means the Democrats are floating: packing the Court and abolishing the Senate. In other words, setting up a system where there are no checks upon government power and so they’ll just do whatever they want and arrest us if we complain. If the Democrats can’t get that – and it would take a trifecta to do – then they are doomed, and they know it. The people don’t want what they’re selling and they can’t successfully lie to a majority.
I hope the will of the people triumphs on Tuesday and into 2028 and beyond. People can be stupid and perverse and all manner of bad things…but in a system where government is limited, if you consult the broad mass of the people on their desires, you’ll usually find that they mostly want sensible things. Popular passions rarely go awry – the Elite would have us believe, of course, that if the people really rule we’ll destroy the world. But that is just a lie the Elite tell themselves to justify their theft and degeneracy. If we can get through these next two years without the Democrats winning total power, then they will never again win power as they are currently constituted. It is all on the line. It doesn’t end Tuesday win or lose – but it does end soon, and once and for all as far as the United States is concerned.
Excellent list of things that past presidents have either reneged on or intentionally hid until after they were elected.
