Why haven’t the Russians finished off the Ukrainians? Short answer: they’re Russians.

Anyone who knows a bit of history knows the Russians have never been first rate at offensive operations, especially early on. It took some real effort for the Russians to produce Tannenberg with the Russian 2nd Army being essentially wiped out in a few days, but it does give the flavor of how Russia goes to war. It is part of the Russian natural character, I guess: being slipshod.

A guy who claims to be an expert on logistic matters (and he seems like he knows what he’s talking about) took a look at all that Russian transport that got bogged down in the mud and noticed that it was the tires causing the problem – they had fallen apart. He then noted that when he was in charge of the American version of such vehicles, they had to be continually maintained to avoid just that: tires blowing out the minute you go off road or otherwise hit something rough. Now, you can bet on it that the commander of those Russian vehicles reported himself 100% ready to go…which means he gundecked his readiness reports and had his fingers crossed when they invaded. This, to be sure, isn’t a disease just of the Russian army – all peacetime military forces suffer from it. But sorta double it for the Russians (and I’ve also heard tell that their Defense Minister is a Court favorite…another common failing in Russia is putting the lives of soldiers in the hands of the guy who can best entertain the Tsar).

So, Ivan did his usual. He did this in 1940, too, and got whacked from pillar to post by the Finns. The Russians left about 150,000 dead on the field there. And I think what a lot of people up high were expecting was for the Ukrainians to do the same as the Finns. Rely on it: our military intel people know the capability of the Russian army: in between lectures on pronoun usage, they still actually gather and assess data. Because of this, we and our allies went rather whole hog for Ukraine. But the Finns didn’t show up. The Ukrainians did. And, hate to break it to everyone, they’re just Russians with a different accent. With juicy, road-bound targets all over the place, the Ukrainians made no real move against them. And now the Russians have sorted out their issues and are starting to roll ahead – latest map I saw from UK MoD indicates a rapidly unfolding offensive which seems to be set on taking over all territory east of the Dnieper. Whether the Russians will go further remains to be seen.

Pudding Brain gave his speech. I didn’t watch. From reactions, it didn’t go over well. You know that if the Morning Joe people are praising it to the skies, it was a dud. Here is Joe’s problem:

The Mrs went out to get gas today and it was more than $4 a gallon. When she got to Ross to shop, she saw a man waltz out of the store with an armload of stolen goods…right past the security guard who is under instructions not to interfere. So, our budget is getting stressed by high food and energy costs and I’ve got to worry that my wife will be rubbing elbows with criminals when she goes shopping.

That is the State of the Union. There is no other State of the Union. And no amount of Pudding Brain/MSM gaslighting will change this.

After my wife told me that, my blood went into slow boil. I admit to actually getting feelings of hatred for those responsible. This was un-Christian of me and I’m sorry for it. But it was there. And I at last realized that even someone as relaxed as me has a limit. Our opponents have ruined this nation…and it is just getting worse and worse. Can you imagine what things will be like after 3 more years of this? I can’t – and I wonder just when those vastly less patient and merciful than me will get to their limit?

Manchin sat with the GOP during Pudding Brain’s speech. My guess: he switches either right before or just after the mid-terms.

Did you watch it? If you didn’t, you missed an amazing speech. I remember Reagan, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one as good. If you did miss it, here’s the text – but you’ll want to find a video of it. Worth every minute of your time.

Wow and wow and just more wow. It was a grand and glorious thing – hitting on the massive accomplishments of Trump’s term but also bringing everyone to tears several times…if you didn’t get misty eyed over Brigadier General McGee and his grandson, then you’re just a dirty commmie.

How in heck are these Democrats going to beat this guy? I guess we’ll see what they do – but Nancy tearing up her copy of the speech as Trump stepped down is an indicator of how bad this is going for them.

Super Bowl Open Thread

Super Bowl is a bit “meh”. We all know that Brady and the Patriots are going to win…and we don’t really like the Rams, either. But, I’ll watch…

Legal Insurrection has a positive review of “First Man”. A movie I really wanted to see, until I found out they cut the flag raising bit. What really irritated me is that I know the real reason they did: the Chinese market. Mark my words on this: the world would very much like to erase the fact that not only were Americans first to the Moon, but the Americans who did it were AMERICAN to their finger tips. And I mean from Astronauts down to the guys who cleaned up after hours. The world grits their teeth on it…and they are hoping that the next human to the Moon is non-American so they can completely emphasize that and try to make Armstrong into a footnote. This is why I want us back there before anyone else…and to Mars before anyone else.

Word is that Trump’s SOTU will be about “Choosing Greatness”. Good theme. It’ll irritate the liberals…and it’ll be funny to watch them claim that “Choosing Greatness” doesn’t mean things like Moon shots, but providing free college.

Why was Northam’s picture not used? Well:

During the 1992 campaign, I was a military aide to an assistant secretary in one of the cabinet departments and all of my counterparts were Bush Schedule C appointees. Through them, I became acquainted with some senior people on the Bush campaign team. There was tons of oppo on Bill Clinton and his horndogging and the fights between Bill and Hillary on the campaign trail and some really salacious stuff on Hillary’s extra-curricular activities but the Bush campaign elected not to use it in large part because Bush was still stinging from the Willie Horton ad. So finding a GOP campaign acting against its own interests for the sake of being a noble loser isn’t new. I would submit the 2008 McCain campaign had as its objective to be a gracious loser to the first viable black presidential candidate. I’ve never really been convinced Mitt Romney wanted anything more than to lose cleanly in 2012.

I find this to be entirely believable. I’m quite certain that the reason the Left has rolled from one triumph to another since 1968 in spite of being insanely out of step with the American majority is because the GOP simply refused to fight. It is why so many people hate Trump – he is fighting. And, by fighting, winning. And, now: what don’t we know about all the senior Democrats of the past 40 years? I’ll bet its a lot – there are probably whole file cabinets of dirt that GOPers have, but never used.

Some military leaders in Venezuela are starting to break with the Communist dictatorship. I hope it is true: a nice revolution overthrowing the left is always a good thing.

Misanthropic Humanitarian over at Ace goes over the way the left is going after Mrs. Pence. This is battle space prep, in my view: they still hope to get Trump out, and so wish to pre-smear the Pence’s…and even if they can’t get Trump out, smearing them works long-term because it is highly likely that Pence will run in 2024 and, also, as the Pence’s are deeply Christian, such a campaign works towards the Left’s general desire to demonize Christians out of public life.

SOTU/Iranian Hostage Crisis Open Thread

Wonder if this will put a damper on Obama claiming success in the Iran deal during the State of the Union?

Iranian military forces seized two U.S. Navy boats Tuesday and are holding them in custody on Iran’s Farsi Island in the middle of the Persian Gulf, senior U.S. officials told NBC News.

Officials said it’s unclear whether the 10 American sailors who were aboard one of the small riverine boats had strayed into Iranian territorial waters before they were captured.

The officials said the Americans were on a training mission around noon ET when their boat experienced mechanical difficulty and drifted into Iranian-claimed waters and were seized by Iranian Coast guard.

Iran is claiming they were in Iran’s waters – naturally, our government is appearing to go along with this claim. Even if true, the proper response from a civilized power is to just warn them off, not seize them. This could, of course, just be one of those things that happen – but it could also be Iran seeing just how far they can go. They are already routinely insulting us and challenging us and seeing that Obama is willing to put up with anything rather than put his “legacy” deal with Iran in jeopardy. This just might be more in that game – and if it is, then expect some very aggressive Iranian action in the area soon…if we back down on this, Iran’s government will pretty much know for certain that Obama will not, under any circumstances, take on Iran.

Perhaps Obama should set up an empty chair for our national honor…
