This Is Hilarious, And Sad At The Same Time – Open Thread

“CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — The Treasury Department is resisting General Motors’ push for the government to sell off its stake in the auto maker, The Wall Street Journal reports. Following a $50 billion bailout in 2009, the U.S. taxpayers now own almost 27% of the company. But the newspaper said GM executives are now chafing at that, saying it hurts the company’s reputation and its ability to attract top talent due to pay restrictions.”

So the Obama regime is RESISTING efforts of a private company to be private again. After forcing the resignation of their CEO, capping executive pay, and imposing the build out of their “green car” dreams, which is now out of production, the Obama regime is saying no to selling back it’s shares because of course that would then nullify Obama’s big campaign slogan – “We saved GM”!!

Unbelievable. Sadly though, the unbelievable has become believable in the surreal Obama universe.

Lot’s going on folks. Have at it and be civil.

The Root Of The Problem

As I sit here this morning reading about the Chicago teacher strike and watching my daily dose of MSNBC, I realize that there is one component to the poverty problem that goes unmentioned, and one that is actually at the root of the problem, but an uncomfortable and politically incorrect fact, so it’s no surprise why it is glossed over. And that root of the problem is ……..   irresponsible parenting. MSNBC was showing a chart on the material items that the “poor” in America own, a chart of which we have all seen and one that shows that over half, in fact nearly 80% of what all “poor” households own and that is – microwave ovens, tv’s, cars, computers, cellphones, etc., so it is not a lack of material items that poor children are deprived of. What they are deprived of is a responsible parent, or preferably PARENTS, in the plural. We, as a society, have spent trillions of dollars on welfare programs over the last couple of decades, and current welfare spending is at record levels, including free breakfast and lunch programs at schools, increases in unemployment benefits, increases in job training programs, increases in WIC benefits to single mothers, and continued increases in pay and benefits to teachers, as evidenced by the tentative agreement in Chicago, so we now have teachers who should be well motivated and equipped to properly instruct our children. What we have, is a lack of responsible parents. Parents of whom will choose to stay married, only have children that they can afford, make sure that their children are up, fed and ready for school, make sure that their children are home safe at night, fed, and have their homework done, and make sure that their children understand the consequences of making bad decisions. You can not  smoke pot, drink alcohol, do drugs, have promiscuous unprotected sex, tattoo your entire body, pierce every orifice, and neglect your studies and expect to lead a very productive life. We can spend all the money in the world on poverty programs, and we can have all the government panels in the world addressing the problem, but unless and until we address this simple truth, nothing will change.

DNC Convention – Day II

Well so far, the Democrats have voted against God, against Israel, but in support of  tax payer funded abortion at any time for any reason. In fact, they even support aborting the child after pregnancy, so the question is for Democrats – at what age is it not ok to kill your child?

Feel free to discuss.

UPDATE, by Mark Noonan:  Well, I guess someone got a call from Flyover Country because the Donk’s decided they had to re-insert God and Jerusalem in to the platform…trouble is, it seems that at least half the assembled Democrats didn’t want to re-insert the language. Hot Air has it all.

These people are pathetic – growing more and more alienated from the American mainstream and yet remaining mostly too cowardly to admit it.

UPDATE II, by Mark Noonan:  I could barely stomach Michelle’s speech last night so I’m going to spare myself the Clinton speech.  At any rate, I can nutshell his speech:

My fellow Americans, please forget what Obama has done the past four years and try to pretend you are re-electing me.  I know I had zero to do with the prosperity you remember from the 90’s, but I so slickly took credit for it in those pre-New Media days that most of you have forgotten that I fought tooth and nail against the policies which made the 90’s work.  So, vote for Barack because he’ll continue what I did – and I don’t mean the womanizing.  Heck, I also don’t mean the taking-credit-for-the-work-of-others, either, because Obama hasn’t the wit to allow Republicans to govern and then grab all the credit.  But Obama will continue….well…humm…he’ll at least continue the lies and the feel-good, poll-tested political bullsh** you all remember so well from me.

God bless you all.

OUTRAGE!!!!

I hear that there are catcalls from everywhere in the left wing fever swamp to pull broadcast licenses. Death threats have been left on the answering machines of corporate officers, and “99 %ers” have been camped out on their lawns.  Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are leading the charge with their bullhorns, calling for JUSTIIIICE!!

Wait– You mean it wasn’t Fox and Rupert Murchoch that did this? You mean it was NBC that did this?

Never mind–move along…nothing to see here.

NBC Stumbles Into PC Trap | Power Line
Is NBC raaaciiist? They’re getting hammered right now for the juxtaposition of their coverage of Gabby Douglas’s gold medal in gymnastics and a network spot promoting an upcoming NBC show. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving…

What’s In A Name?

Make no mistake. They are no longer the “Bush tax cuts.” They were tax cuts when they were enacted in 2001 and 2003. They have been the going tax rate for the past 9 years. They are the Bush tax rates. Any move to increase the current tax rates amounts to a TAX INCREASE. The Bill passed in the Senate today was NOT A TAX CUT BILL. It would simply maintain CURRENT TAX RATES for those making 250K or less.

And for some reason known but to God, Harry Reid thinks that if you make $250,000 (many small businesses fall into this category) that you’re magically a millionaire! (Liberals were never very good at math, were they?).

Not only that, they think that taking resources from those who have the ability to create jobs during this economy will somehow help the economy.

Moronic thinking such as this deserves no quarter. These clowns MUST GO.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s fellow Democrats in the Senate on Wednesday won passage of a bill to renew tax cuts for tens of millions of Americans, while

obAMATEUR Expands the Dependent Class AGAIN and Bypasses Congress!

Let’s look at this pResident’s accomplishments:

  • Government takeover of 17% of the economy and your health care.
  • Doubling the number of Americans on food stamps.
  • Spanish soap operas to encourage Hispanics to sign up for food stamps.

And now……

Since the beginning Obama intended to reverse the welfare reforms made by the Republican majority when Clinton was president.  Those reforms freed millions of Americans from their government dependency.  This is not the direction in which Obama wants to travel.

The Obama administration via the Department of Health and Human Services has essentially rewritten the rules established by the welfare reform law of 1996.  The new policy, as per the Obama administration, will no longer require welfare recipients to work in order to maintain their benefits.

(For those who cannot connect the dots)FROM THE MEMO:

Waivers will be granted only for provisions related to section 402.

Of the roughly 35 sections of the TANF law, only one is listed as waiveable under section 1115. This is section 402.

Section 402 describes state plans—reports that state governments must file to HHS describing the actions they will undertake to comply with the many requirements established in the other sections of the TANF law. The authority to waive section 402 provides the option to waive state reporting requirements only, not to overturn the core requirements of the TANF program contained in the other sections of the TANF law.

The new Obama dictate asserts that because the work requirements, established in section 407, are mentioned as an item that state governments must report about in section 402, all the work requirements can be waived. This removes the core of the TANF program; TANF becomes a blank slate that HHS bureaucrats and liberal state bureaucrats can rewrite at will – or mealy mouthed words as “innovation”..

Therefore, states and other bureaucracies can DEFINE WORK as they attempted before but were overridden.

Over the years, the definition of “work” began to deteriorate and in 2005, Congress tried to reign in the definition of what constitutes “work” in order to receive welfare.   Barack Obama, a Senator at that time, was opposed to this effort – no surprise there.

Here is a SENATE report as to what states have attempted to define as work:

http://www.finance.senate.gov/newsroom/ranking/release/?id=47ada91c-07ac-4c7f-bc20-182df03d2654

Some of these include:
1.    Bed rest
2.    Personal care activities
3.    Massage
4.    Exercise
5.    Journaling
6.    Motivational reading
7.    Smoking cessation
8.    Weight loss promotion
9.    Participating in parent teacher meetings
10.  Helping a friend or relative with household tasks and errands

These are what casper tried to pass off as “innovation”. How Sec. of HHS can grant waivers to states that have these activities (or whatever else) in their innovative plans (Section 402).

So, when he says “moving in the right direction”, I guess this is it – EXPANDING the dependent class!

Question is, does this pResident have the authority to do this – reverse law WITHOUT CONGRESS!  I mean this has never stopped him before!!

The Heritage Foundation reminds us of the growing list of Obama administration actions that it has taken to circumvent the legislative process.

  • Even though the Democrat-controlled Senate rejected the President’s cap-and-trade plan, his Environmental Protection Agency classified carbon dioxide, the compound that sustains vegetative life, as a pollutant so that it could regulate it under the Clean Air Act.
  • After the Employee Free Choice Act—designed to bolster labor unions’ dwindling membership rolls—was defeated by Congress, the National Labor Relations Board announced a rule that would implement “snap elections” for union representation, limiting employers’ abilities to make their case to workers and virtually guaranteeing a higher rate of unionization at the expense of workplace democracy.
  • After an Internet regulation proposal failed to make it through Congress, the Federal Communications Commission announced that it would regulate the Web anyway, even despite a federal court’s ruling that it had no authority to do so.
  • Although Congress consistently has barred the Department of Education from getting involved in curriculum matters, the Administration has offered waivers for the No Child Left Behind law in exchange for states adopting national education standards, all without congressional authorization.
  • Since it objects to existing federal immigration laws, the Administration has decided to apply those laws selectively and actively prevent the state (like Arizona) from enforcing those laws themselves.
  • Rather than push Congress to repeal federal laws against marijuana use, the Department of Justice (DOJ) simply decided it would no longer enforce those laws.
  • DOJ also has announced that it would stop enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act or defending it from legal challenge rather than seeking legislative recourse.

These are the actions of a RULER, not a leader. It’s too bad more Americans haven’t focused on the words of Valerie Jarrett – the head of Obama’s transition team – days before his inauguration:  “We will be ready to RULE from day one.”

The Dying Process

Amid all the acrimony over the political process, not only on this blog, but across the new and old media, I’d like to offer a different kind of post for a change; something that everyone, regardless of philosophy can probably relate to on some level.

As several of you know, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about 18 months ago. According to the doctors she was supposed to be dead LAST June.  She passed away recently with family by her bedside.  We were led to believe that the end of her life would likely be ugly, painful and gut wrenching. It was not, and I’d like to share with the readers the magnificent way my mom dealt with the process of dying.

At the funeral her pastor gave one of the most personalized eulogies I’ve ever heard; my brother and sister spoke about how she lived and the people she touched, and I spoke about the graceful, dignified and often humorous way she dealt with the process of dying; all of which contributed to her extra year every bit as much as her medical treatment according to her oncologist.  I recounted the day I took her home after the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was confirmed.  She sat down on her sofa and let out a big sigh and said, “well, I guess that’s it — I’m going to die.”  That defeatist attitude was so uncharacteristic of one of the strongest, most positive women I’ve ever known that I was somewhat taken by surprise.  Knowing her strong faith, I told her that only one person in history had escaped death, and she wasn’t going to be the second, nor was she going to die that day.  She looked at me and smiled and said, “no, and probably not tomorrow either, but if I fall asleep tonight and don’t wake up, that will be fine, and if I wake up tomorrow, that will be OK too.”

She woke up to over 500 more tomorrows after that day, most of them good ones.  When we celebrated her birthday last fall, one of her grandchildren commented that, even though it wasn’t a surprise party, it was a pleasant surprise that she was still there.  Mom replied, “yeah, I guess the doctors just didn’t realize what a tough old broad I am.”

Her treatment, (a combination of a short regimen of radiation followed by weekly chemo) which I’m sure some will characterize as excessive for a woman nearing the century mark, especially given that her disease was incurable, was designed to make what time she had left more comfortable and shorten the pain and agony at the end.  It accomplished those goals in spades with minimal negative side effects, and none of us ever regretted allowing her oncologist to convince us to take that course of action.  The only hospital stay during her last year and a half was toward the end for a few days to deal with a kidney stone.  The end came quickly and peacefully with only 11 days in hospice care during which she was still able to sit up and talk with family and friends right up until the last two and a half days.

My mom always had a great sense of humor, which was never more evident than when she came down the home stretch.  About a week before she died, my sister and I were sitting next to her bed talking quietly so as not to wake her.  At one point she opened her eyes, look over at us and asked, “so, how long does this dying process take anyway?”  That sense of humor lingered in the room even after she was no longer conscious.  A day or two before she died, my brother, his wife and oldest daughter and I were sitting around the bed talking.  A nurse walked in, and hearing us talking in normal voices, said, “you realize she can still hear your, don’t you?”  To which my niece replied, “no she can’t; she doesn’t have her hearing aids in.”  We all had a good laugh, even the nurse.

And in the end, she did just fall asleep and not wake up; it’s just that she fell asleep on Monday night and didn’t wake up on Thursday morning, but no one is quibbling over the extra two days in there.  She even got one of her last wishes – perhaps her LAST wish.  She asked me a week or so before she died what it was like outside, having not been out for a couple weeks.  I told her it was in the 90’s with a 25 mph wind that made it feel like you were standing in front of a giant hair dryer, a weather pattern that has been our norm over the last 6 weeks or so.  She said she hoped it would be cooler for her funeral.  It was — 81 and sunny.  Yesterday in Fort Wayne it was 106.

The Day that Freedom Died…with apologies to Don McClean

~A long long time ago

 I can still remember how

That freedom used to make me smile

And I knew if I we had our chance

We could get people out of their trance

And maybe they’d be lucid for a while

But my computer made me shiver

With every web page it delivered

Bad news on the doorstep

I couldn’t take one more step

I can’t remember if I cried

When I read Roberts bought the lies..

But something touched me deep inside

**The day that freedom died** Continue reading

Have at it folks, There is a lot going on, so I want to know what’s on your mind:

– your thoughts on Obama’ s immigration decree

– your thoughts on MSNBC editing another tape to make Romney look bad having learned nothing from the Trayvon Martin shameful incident

– your thoughts on calls for Holder’s resignation

– your thoughts on Romney’s campaign so far – is his message resonating

And so many other issues of interest, so have at it and keep it civil

Dreamers

So Friday was an interesting day. Julius Caesar or I mean President Obama decreed that illegal aliens between the ages of 18-30 I believe along with some other criteria, will no longer have to  worry about being deported and can obtain work visas. A noble idea to be sure, and one that would find little argument amongst conservatives, but the manner in which it was done is not only politically questionable but once again is legally questionable. Obama has a sworn duty to uphold the laws, and can not give orders to any federal agency to over look those laws, so once again Obama may find himself in court. But the bigger question is the political one, and there are plenty of those, justifiably. First of all, Obama had two years of a super Congressional majority during which he could have accomplished a lot, and actually did, much to mine, and many others chagrin, but failed to do anything about immigration reform which he had actually promised to do. Instead, he spent that time chasing the democrats holy grail of government run healthcare. That should tell the Hispanic community of where his priorities are, and this last minute bone he is throwing them is an actual insult in my opinion. Of course that is in stark contrast as to how the Obama sycophantic media is reporting it, according to them, this was a deft move that caught Romney off guard.

However this recent stunt by Obama is typical liberal – appeasing and assuaging the proletariat with feel good, do nothing policies that only serve to keep the masses wanting more. What needs to be done is serious reform, with compassionate measures such as this built in to the bill. In fact Marco Rubio is, or was, working on a very similar piece of legislation that he planned to introduce to the floor, you know the proper method of getting things done, until Obama delivered his sermon, so this is hardly an idea that will be fought. In fact, President Bush initiated reform legislation which was defeated mainly by conservatives because of the amnesty aspect, but there is common ground and their is a political will I believe on both sides of the aisle to get something done. A real leader would recognize and work wintin the system to get something meaningful, instead iwe get just a band aid on a gaping wound for our country and we will need serious people to resolve this problem – not some narcissistic, egomaniac looking to win an election.
